Uhhh to begin with, it's not like I didn't like Akame ga Kill! in fact, it was one of my first anime. Idk once you become more "experienced" you'll start to realize or notice things in anime that you wouldn't have before. For example, killing important characters doesn't make the plot heavy or dark, they just... died. If you focus on the plot itself without taking the gore and deaths into consideration, you'll see that it's basically an abusive government being taken down by people. I'm not sure if the examples below are accurate or something but they're in fact "darker" and have a far better plot, but then again comparing them with Akame ga Kill! a shounen/action anime, would be somewhat odd.
Death Parade
Durarara!!
Guilty Crown
Inuyashiki
Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica
Mirai Nikki
Sankarea
Shinsekai yori
Steins;Gate
Tokyo Ghoul
You'll understand why it's so "underrated" once you watch more anime. I'd say character development wasn't one of its strong points, and tbh you could just tell who was going to die next by the amount of screen time they were receiving. Most of people who just got into anime think that characters dying = deep and dark plot, pretty inaccurate if you ask me. As for the deaths though, Leone's and Tatsumi's were just bullshit and not realistic nor fulfilled their causes.
