If my memory serves me right, it's also worth noting that Mononoke and Kaiba are original works, thus there is be no source material where people can make a comparison of the character design to. Tatami Galaxy was adapted from a novel, while Ping Pong's manga ended long time ago in 1997. The manga itself is not as widely read as Aku no Hana, if the MAL statistic can be used as a reliable measure. Besides, Ping Pong was serialized on a seinen magazine, not a shounen one in the case of Aku no Hana. Based on my guesstimate, there must be a lot of devoted Aku no Hana fans whom represent the number of watchers, which we could not say for the other anime. As a result, it could've caused the statistic to be unusually negatively skewed.

Based on its trailer, I also found the photorealistic character design to be enticing. However, when compared to the typical anime graphic, it is far from what is usually considered as great, especially when considering that anime watchers are dominated by battle-shounen fans, so I can understand why the dislike is coming from. I saw it as a distinct and unique design, like Mononoke and most of Masaaki Yuasa's works.
I guess his answer was sufficient enough, and it's also good to understand that he's very openminded in both iterations. It goes to show that both the anime and the manga have their own charm, so I can easily proceed with whichever medium as a start.

I guess the artistic flair that Hiroshi Nagahama envisioned did not bode well with the manga fans. I learned that the non manga readers generally praise the adaptation, especially for the realistic and "ugly" animation technique that drew plenty of debates by the manga fans.

Hey, I stumbled on your Haruko Murakami core stack, and the list really piqued my interest. From the 7 shows that I haven't watched, I'm particularly interested in the anime version of Flowers of Evil. What do you think about the creative liberty taken for the anime, especially on the character design, as a lot of manga readers seem to be distraught with this decision? that being said, i feel sonny boy would make a snug fit in there. if you consider that the overarching theme of that show is growing out of one's escapist tendencies and taking the lessons learned from allowing runaway fantasies-turned-falsified reality types to sober up and reflect on why it's more bearable to live true to his or her belief system, it may quickly dawn on you that the similarities between itself and the fabric that holds it together as well as that which binds much of Murakami's body of work, run deeper than previously thought.
