Yeah, I think that idea is a possibility, that he was trying to say, "I went on a date with you because I wanted to," but saying it that way could easily be interpreted as "I went on a date with you just to mess with you." But I think it's very believable, because he's been kind of losing it throughout the season and isn't able to think it all through.

Personally I think he said that to comfort her, like he accepted went with her because he wanted to, and not because of a search. But this is ignoring some other details, so it's a bit of a longshot.
