Should've made this a loooong time ago. I'm first and foremost a magical girl fan, but I also enjoy shounen, slice of life, and shoujo. Will one day watch/read everything affiliated with CLAMP.
Yes!!! Tohru and Hatsuharu, etc. Tohru might come acorss like a prophetess or saint, but I think she's super nice. Has a good heart. Lord Sesshoumaru and Rin! Yes! He turned out to be a nice fatherly figure. The emotions.
I read your review of death note. While I agree that it doesn't portray women greatly but I don't think it's deeply misogynist.
1. That ass whatever shots were due to some reason (if you are recalling that book scene) as a there are people who do that anyway and buy these kind of books. Light was just showing that he is just a pervert and it wasn't shown as disrespect to women but a bait way. Not to mention that his father isn't proud in that and L just stating obvious there.
2. They showed Light's father more because he was in police force which also was working with L. Sure, I wanted to see Light's mom and sister's struggle after they showed the clip of them. Not to mention that second half is rushed so maybe manga has something else to say.
3. Naomi: if I remember then it was that marriage girl who had to left her duty due to that. It sucks but in broader point of view it just showed better point of view as actually it was their mistake to not include her and also showed that what society is doing. After all, not letting her into the duty only lead to the death of her husband anyway, otherwise, light would've been defeated early on. So, in total, not letting her work after marriage pointed out a wrong decision taken by the family. L also mentioned that she was good/great.
4. Yeah, Misa is a character that I agree is shown bad but I hated light due to that reason more than her. She is more likely mentally disturbed person and light using her made me hate him more. Sure she herself forced into light but Light was worse. It's shown that how bad Light treats her as the story goes on. Any normal person would've a sympathy for her at that point but sadly people ignore that due to unlikeability of Misa herself. So I do agree that Misa is a very bad character which should've been better.
5. Kyoumi: Is that the rival of Misa? but for her I am not into misogynist thing as just like many men were shown evil in death note like the businessmen(business evil) or motor bike gang(rapists) or the bullies in first episode or the ones who were in jail and killed by light. Yeah, more men were in jail and killed because in reality more men are in jail too so it's not like that death note make men angels and women devils. Kyoumi is just a typical evil wife and nothing else who's charmed by kira. I won't put her in misa category.
SO, Overall yeah if they had made Misa a dangerous character then who knows how much mind would've gone into that. If done right, it would've put death note more highly regarded than it is now. Misa is still dangerous as it is now but due to point of fan service just for the sake of boy targeted manga. It needs to change. Shonen has to put better female characters too. So, death note isn't deeply misogynist but yeah misogynist due to one character i.e. misa.
