CURRENTLY SUBJECTING MY LISTS TO A COMPLETE OVERHAUL.
Reason being that I am starting a review blogsite and taking my anime ratings seriously. All animes and mangas will hence be subjected to newer ratings as per my own assessment rubrics (which will be available on my site).
Previously highly rated animes may have their ratings dropped by at least a couple of notches. All ratings are inaccurate and for my own reference, hence, the privatization of my lists.
---------
If you're wondering why I have a lot of highly rated animes, it's because I do my homework first before watching a series; by effectively removing all the animes that do not fit my criteria, I thus have a smaller group of animes to choose from and as you can see, most of the choices I've made turned out to be choices I like very much.
I look for new series to watch based not on popular opinion, but on the genres (psychological, supernatural, philosophical, seinen, mature), the plot/storyline (twisty, interesting, with direction), the reviews and lastly, what I can actually learn from what I've watched.
I generally prefer animes that move at a faster pace and actually have a plot with direction as opposed to animes that are about someone's life (I see the community calls that 'a slice of life'), which for some reason unbeknownst to me is hugely popular with most of the anime watching demographic.
I also tend to lean towards anime of a darker, melancholic nature- I'm quite a sucker for tragedies. I guess the most important thing about the animes I watch are the lessons I can learn from them; it appears that Japanese mangakas are quite the philosophical bunch actually, which is mainly why I love anime and manga.
As for my manga list, I tend to read the mangas after I've watched and liked an anime series; though I know it's supposed to be the other way round, I'm rather new to the world of anime and manga (my first anime was Naruto and Bleach, and that was the only 2 animes I watched back in 2005), and back then, I was highly dependent on my Father (yes, my old man actually watches anime...), so the series I got hold of were usually "vetted" by him first. Now that I'm older and have my own computer, I have a little more freedom of choice and discretion to consume the types of entertainment that appeal to me.
