The way I rate anime I watch is by following the site's scoring system. However, there are a few details that determine under what score anime will fall under.
Anime that are 5 and below will have generic writing and by this I mean writing that you will usually see in many other anime i.e being too predictable, developments that don't flow with the rest of a plot (if applicable) etc. I don't see any significant value in these shows and will score then based on how much I enjoyed them.
Anime that are 6-7 may have flaws mentioned above but stray from the average anime through presentation with at least 1 interesting point (objectively). Storytelling is usually decent and characters are solid.
Anime that are 8-9 will usually have pretty solid plots and characters. Storytelling will try to stay away from the usual generic developments and most characters will be believable and understandable in their motives.
Scoring anime as a masterpiece is something I'm still uneasy of doing right now, but I may do it after a few years or so to see if the anime has aged well (objectively).
