Ping! Hahahah it's such a long time I kind of didn't expect your comment or believe it when I saw it! How have you been?
tk_a May 28, 2014 3:47 PM
Well you've practically already watched it. xD No harm in furnishing the rest, I assume. That's an amazing fan art!
tk_a May 28, 2014 9:10 AM
Screenplay is good (they try to maintain good angles and coherence of frames) in Code Geass. It is fairly commercial, it does have elements that appeal to the mainstream target audience. The story is fairly hard to grasp mid-way, plus you don't want to know of some important plot details prior to knowing the basis of the series, which is why I suggest you don't chip in the middle. =P You're right about the animation, to someone watching it firsthand it does come across as sharply in contrast to other anime. The art is done by the CLAMP group (who also did artwork for Cardcaptor Sakura, who is incidentally in your profile picture). I think they wanted to establish a unique selling point for the series in its noodle-figure animations. The facial gestures are well done and suit the moods, as you might have noticed. In particular, I thought eyes were better animated in this series than in the usual fare. The storyline is a complete winner. The series itself appears to me to attempt to establish its mainstream interest, embellishing it with artistic aspects in art, screenplay and to some extent, music. As you rightly noted, the mecha part is probably an idea to rope in mainstream shonen audiences. I am not a fan of it, but that's all right in this case since the anime doesn't require you to focus on the mecha part seriously. The storyline is complex, excluding the (as you will discover) superficial details like mecha and shonen stuff.

All the best for your exam!

Incidentally, I'd first watched Code Geass as a filler for my break time in between study sessions for a mid-semester exam at undergrad. i happened to get so hooked onto the series that as the night progressed, my anime breaks were longer than my study sessions, ultimately leading to pure anime watching without study sessions until both R1 and R2 ended. Whew.

I know that feeling. =D It's 5.30 PM here. You too, byebye (^_^) V

You're right. Similar people make you do things you'd normally never, ever do... if you think about the psychological dynamics of the situation, it's kinda beautiful...

You read*beer? Sorry I didn't get that, could you explain? xD

It's not really a thing of genius in itself, trust me. It means nothing. It is kind of fun though. I have some unbelievably funny stories of masti and err... you know. chutiyapa(?) xD over there.

Um, could you also explain the last part? In what context were you talking about 'nice to know'? I mean, there's so much transfer of information I lost track. Sorry =(

Oh never mind! It's just this national competition conducted by IIT-G students. In 2011, I was a chief organizer of it. I made the question paper that students all over India wrote, and I executed a pretty ballsy paper. It is another of the really memorable things I happened to do that people don't normally utilize the divergent thinking to create.

Well some anime I watched did turn out to be masterfully executed since I watched Code Geass. You know how it feels to watch a 10/10 anime - they can't be really compared amidst each other because the particular masterfully executed elements/nature of expression varies. But yeah you must know what it feels like. =)

I totally agree with you on the history book suggestion. xD

Really? Nice to know. :-3
tk_a May 10, 2014 1:54 PM
Okay quick question - Do you know about Technothlon?
tk_a May 10, 2014 1:46 PM
I agree with you, psychology is very interesting! I could have a discussion for hours with you on this! ^_^

I... well it's kind of hard to explain. But let's put it this way. I think that I'm pretty good under pressure. I can function under pressure better than many people can. And I believe in my competence, sometimes. Not always, but I honestly don't like being made to look like an average. I don't think I'm an average. I was an average at IIT academically, but I had stuff I could do people weren't in the same league in. Rough examples here - I used to be incredibly insanely fast in anagrams. I used to solve the anagrams in the local online game in IIT-G in less than a second per word. When you see me playing anagrams, it feels like I know the word before it comes out. But that part of me has died in here. No one gives two shits about anagrams, but that's ok! Besides, I only did it to kill some time. Then, I used to discuss stuff with people and explore stuff with people. It's hard to explain... but it was a community in which I had my 'niche', and I don't fit into any niche in here. Except for someone that attends classes, submits homeworks when they're due and writes exams. People have different priorities than mine, and I can't hang out with people that simply don't see things the way I do. I mean, to them, I might be fun for a hours over a beer party or something. But like I tell you, I want to be worth more than that. It hasn't really happened in the last year. Anyway. It is a somewhat complicated issue I've learnt that dealing with it in action beats talking about it. In a way. At least, it helps me to see it through rather than wallow in the pity-muck over it.

It has been near the top place of anime I've watched since almost the beginning of my anime watching career, some years back. It hasn't changed. Do you think it's weird if I tell you, that Code Geass may be the one anime I've constantly compared other anime to since I first watched it, perhaps hoping (at a deeper level) that they give rise to the same extremity in emotion, but it never really happened? Do you think it's weird that I used to listen to one song to sleep to while in bed for about 6-7 months, nearly every night, and that was the one from Code Geass because it felt so intensely satisfying? There's a difference between happiness and contentment. It's really all in the mind. We're all just humans, just animals scrambling around on the surface of a solitary rock in vast, empty space. Did you realize how hopeless that it? Do you also realize how honestly good it must feel that something gives you a hope to feel happy despite the truth of the matter? When you feel that there's something out there you can't really control that may not be trying to harm you (maybe, its even trying to help you!) you feel contented. At that moment, the truth of the world doesn't matter. What matters is that even if for a slight moment of a lapse, you feel as if you could entrust your fate to someone else. Or something else. That's hope. Code Geass made me feel hopeful. How many anime have you seen that truly pushes you to the limits of your imagination? The best parts about Code Geass (don't worry, no spoiler here) lie in what is NOT shown, rather than what is directly fed to the audiences. Surprised? Well most people don't really understand this. The extent of the masterpiece that it is, lies precisely in the fact that the producers made an anime that appeals to both the circlejerking crowds and people who really mean to analyze and appreciate the anime that they see.
tk_a May 10, 2014 1:23 PM
Hahaha. xD I remember doing things like that too, when watching an anime I couldn't wait to finish. <3

That reminded me of some horror series on my to watch list! Like Ayakashi and Jigoku Shoujo. I should watch them soon, but there are so many on my to watch list already. I think it'll have to wait.

I agree with your analysis. I found the needless ritual they did (not talking to each other) pretty forced, and uninteresting. Mashiro is pretty naive, and Miho is completely uninteresting. The artists didn't even draw her very pretty, so she's the sink of some major criticism from me. As such, Bakuman is a rather linear series.

Having said that, Code Geass is quite simply one of the most well-executed multi-dimensional anime I've seen. Heck, it might even be the superlative best anime I've seen. I'm not one to be drawn into the circlejerking fanatic fanclubs that scream 'Code Geass!' 'Code Geass!' without analyzing what they're really supporting. I've watched the series twice, I've analyzed the plot, music and dialogues, and can attest to it myself that the series is so deeply engaging and enthralling. With a perfect plot (I hope you trust me for my experience of anime, I don't throw around the word 'perfect' easily. By perfect, I mean completely self-sufficient in what the producers wanted to exhibit.), beautiful music, deep ties to philosophies that I find myself constantly engaged in, constant psychological fodder and extreme (and at times, brilliantly executed) angles and artwork; it is quite simply the most heartfelt recommendation that I can provide for any anime. So much so that I recommend you to urgently watch it so we can discuss so many different things about it. I agree with people generally hyping contemporary anime and how that can give rise to a dislike for it in you, but for this particular case, please - "Screw what other people think, watch it!" =)
tk_a May 10, 2014 12:32 PM
Hey, it is my opinion that it's really difficult to implement a horror in a genre without sound. I still can't picture it entirely clearly. I mean, I've seen horror movies and they rely on the element of a sudden camera angle shift coupled to a loud noise, or some screaming. Maybe shattering glass? I can't exactly picture how much scarier it can get in manga. This will be an interesting excursion!
tk_a May 10, 2014 12:28 PM
Yeah Miho was a waste of screen space. What kind of a stupid girl wants to impose those crazy, crappy rules within a relationship? And why should the guy be okay with it? She wasn't compatible with the series at all, let alone Mashiro. =P I mean, there are some series I watched because of an amazing connection between the lead characters. This is one series I watched DESPITE a lousy connection. >=(
