Yeah, having an open mind about anime is good, because you might find something that you never thought of previously, turn out to be one of your favorites. Another approach that I use is, when I find a anime/manga that I like, I always try find something else that creator of the series made, and I give that a shot too.
There aren't too many people who list, psychological as one of their favorite types, but for me some of my favorite anime are psychological. I just like to watch/read things that have a lot of thought to them, I also like mystery and suspense types too.
But in the end a good story and some good characters trump everything else. So even if something doesn't fit into my criteria, I might still give it a shot. :)
my all-time favorite is Lucky Star...but other notables are Death Note, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, ef - a tale of memories, ef - a tale of melodies, Toradora!, Shuffle!, Baccano!, Kanon (2006) and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann...basically anything i rated a 9 or 10.
It was kind of different for me, because a lot of the anime that I saw came off tv, so I had to mostly rely on descriptions and particular characters that I remembered.
What kinds of anime do you like?
