My opinion is simple, look at the top of my profile.

I like a bevy of rappers all for different reasons. For that trap-rap sound, I like Travis Scott, Future and Migos. For that Hip-Hop/Neo-soul, Isaiah Rashad. For a more tongue and cheek version of Kendrick, Ab-soul. Joey Badass is always a nice treat. And Freddie Gibbs's grimy, nocturnal production and gangsta rap persona makes for great cruising music. Pusha-T is becoming a favorite with each passing album, this his last being my favorite from him so far. Drake always got hits I like. Some of Jay Rock, especially from that recent album, songs like Vice City and Easy Bake. Denzel Curry, I'm new to him, but that Imperial project was a huge 1st impression, can't wait to hear more from him. And even some of Lil Yatchy and Lil Uzi Vert's songs are fun bubblegum trap, like songs like Minnesota, 1Night and Wanna be Us by Yacthy and Super Saiyan, All My Chains and Enemies from Uzi. And there's a shit ton more, I could go on for hours. Out of all media, I consume music more than anything, I think I'm up to 10k songs on my computer and gig drive at this point.

That's what you get when a show is as well-written and committed like Monster is, the line ceases to exist and people are just seen for the ugly, yet fascinating things they are. It's the reason it remains one as one of the only 10s I'm willing to give, It never compromises its vision, even when it could cost it audience attentiveness. People complain about the pacing, and I could see that, but personally, I love how the show treats the audience with respect and expect that same level of commitment out of them. If you want something of true substance, you have to be willing to sit down and take it all in for what it is. Yeah, that man dying for Eva was beautiful and really marked the turning point for her as a character as well, making her see a consequence of her actions up to that point. And speaking of Eva, she's actually my go-to example of explaining to people what a four-dimensional character looks like. A true four-dimensional character in the right sense of the word is rare in anime, and Eva is of that special caliber. There's lots of shortcuts that creators take to thinking they're truly capturing the 4th dimension with their characters, but Eva is the real deal.

Yeah, right after GKMC, TPAB is right behind it as my 2nd favorite, but then again, I think trying to designate a favorite is a fruitless effort with me when it comes to music since I tend to prefer one type of sound more than the other depending on the day, so it always flip flops back and forth. But consistently, out of the two, I've revisited GKMC more so that's what I'm basing that off of. We could sing platitudes of Kendrick all day and never be wrong, so I'll just say I agree with you and call it a day. The man is officially one of the greats and I'm sure his newest album coming up would only solidify that even further.

Yeah, what the monster truly is was the show's strongest theme, and I think it's actually the point of the show, the actual chase for Johan was only a vehicle to carry this concept in and gave an excuse to traverse the land and come across other people. As for me, this is my brief interpretation. The "Monster" in this anime is everyone, it's an allegorical representation of morality and human ethics. Each person deals with this "monster" in different ways. Some fight it by upholding a moral compass (tenma), some simply cope with it since they've accepted it as a part of themselves (Grimmer), some are fascinated by it and are compelled to follow it (roberto)..... and some consume it and revels in its madness, ultimately becoming one with the monster itself (Johan). This was also illustrated with the creepy children book that plays at the end of each episode. The Monster split up then consumed itself in the end. Basically a man on a different level, as visually illustrated throughout the series when Johan is quite literally looking down on everyone scurrying around him. Johan (a monster due to his upbringing) consumed his humanity and thus became a person that lacks empathy. He's a literal monster since he thinks nothing of human life and takes pleasure in manipulating people's lives and psyche, becoming someone who exceeds basic human morality, seeing everyone like ants due to what intellectual level he's on. The show even makes reference that had he been a force for good, he could have been an important historical figure like Gandhi or MLK, but because his environment changed him for the worse, he ends up going down the path of someone with equal charisma and rallying aura but with intentions that aren't for the betterment of mankind, so like a Hitler or Jim Jones. Goes to show you that great men, famous or infamous, are born with an innate ability to attract others (as seen with the blind devotion people like roberto and the other thugs have for Johan, or even tenma, compelled to chase him across the country). On the surface, the show is about catching a mass murderer but when you explore the underlining themes, the story takes on new meaning. It's a show that can be viewed at face value and also analyzed to see the hidden depths in the themes it presents. To me, it's the perfect balance of thematically rich content but nothing too complicated for those that don't think critically. It's a show that can appeal to both casual viewers and critical thinkers alike.

Good Kid Mad city is my favorite. To Pimp a Butterly has stronger moments that give me goosebumps (u, Blacker the Berry, For Free etc.) but as far as an album I enjoyed consistently from beginning to end, GKMC is my jam. There are a few songs in TPAB that I don't find appealing sonically, or they have hooks that bother me, like the "shit don't change until you wipe yo ass" thing I just find tacky, despite the honest intent of what it means.

It really doesn't matter though, every Kendrick project is a gem to me in their own way.

I'm not going to drudge through Monster any further, at this point I feel like your ideas of issues and mine just don't align at all, just reading this complaint doesn't make sense from what was visually shown. I can't babysit nitpicks forever, you'll just have to sit down and evaluate your gripes with yourself.
April 7th, praise Kendrick.
ZephSilver Apr 2, 2017 9:26 PM
Uhh, no, it isn't an end all be all defense, just one for a scene in a show, that up to that point, made it abundantly clear that Roberto was not a person to fuck with. That defense only matter if you overthink everything. No one is doing that here.
And the amount of time Monster uses this? Was there someone getting shot off a 1st story building into flames every episode. You're making all these blanket statements as if the show was just full of whimsical elements the entire time. And if your argument derives to anything pertaining to Johan's manipulation of people, that's a whole other story and has more to do with psychoanalysis than it does practicality.

But to answer your question, no, I didn't feel that way at all. I feel like you're looking for any pretext to exacerbate what the show does. Basically getting nitpicky for the sake of being nitpicky. I mean, did you question the fact that in HxH they retconned the entirety of how the nen power structure work, or why Killua literally had a living breathing, breathing wish-granting dues ex machina for a brother that completely defied the pre-established law of the universe presented? No, you probably didn't.
So do I concern myself that a mystery /drama/ thriller that takes after neo-noir would adopt a similar approach to storytelling, that hunting down a serial killer would probably lead to dangerous encounters? No, because in a show where a guy it's literally chasing down the 2nd coming of Hilter, I'm sure there was bound to be lots of physical altercation. It makes logical sense in that universe.

Really? That's not much of a contrivance at all. People have survived worse things in real life, a man with a strong mental fortitude and experience with situations that puts him at death's door all the time would surely have the mental capacity to pull through if a chance presents itself. Rappers like 50 Cent got shot nine times and you don't see people calling that a "contrivance," or the rock climber that got stuck in the middle of nowhere and was forced to amputate his own limb, and survived all that excessive blood loss to get to safety, that too wasn't called a "contrivance." Some people just have more gusto and willpower than others, simple as that, and I think a following professional hitman come with the understanding that this man might be tougher than the average joe.
Contrivances in stories are things that actively fight against the plausibility of it happening in the narrative at play, and seeing that the show starts off with a boy who survives a bullet to the head (something people have survived before), trivializing a scene that doesn't show the man literally burn in the fire with his flesh boiling off, or indicate the severity of the bullet wound itself, that to me is something you could still buy into. If you didn't, oh well I suppose.
