Perhaps you could advocate LIVING as a non-racist is more important than ACTING like a non racist. Identify how we take small daily actions that add up to more in the long run than attending the occasional rally.
Things are better than they once were but I don't think the overall consciousness of the planet is at a point where color blindness can exist. One can acknowledge, even appreciate, a persons background and the different perspectives it gives them, but allowing it to be an excuse is ultimately degrading to them as an individual. (True of more than just racial stuff) No matter who you are, learn to dismiss judgement in favor of compassion. Compassion and sympathy are not the same thing. Sympathy usually stems from some erroneous sense of superiority and judges someone as needing "fixing."
One doesn't have to attend rallies and marches . One just has to, as Gandhi said, "Be the change we wish to see." Lyndon Johnson was a privileged "good old boy" yet the Civil Rights legislation he put in place in the 1960's made the progress we benefit from today possible.
Assuming a white male is a racist is just as negative a stereotype as any other. As one black woman I knew once said, "I don't get upset when I get called a Nigger. I know who and what I am and I am NOT a Nigger," although on occasion, she did inform them with grace and dignity of that fact. If you are indeed a non-racist white male, you then know who you are and as such, do not have to accept misplaced judgement born out of a well meaning but erogenous cultural consciousness.
But I ramble. Hopefully there is a spark of an idea in there somewhere.
Oh, before I go . . . You'll get a kick out of this.
Quite recently I have run into two "old ladies" who love anime. One was introduced to it by her nephew, loves it, and often uses it to help teach English as a second language. Not sure where the other one discovered it but she is quite enthusiastic about it. There may be three "grey hairs" at Sakura Con in Seattle next year. Oh, what fun we'll have freaking the kiddies!
I can appreciate Madoka but I just couldn't get into it some how. Mahou Shoujo Lyrica Nanoha is touted as being similar. Didn't even try it. The other one I wanted to like was Mawaru Penguindrum because it was by the creator of the wierd and wonderful Revolutionary Girl Utena but it just left me cold. Parts of Mirai Nikki appealed to me but it just lacked something. Again, it may be my bias against school stuff. ...but it wasn't about school ...but . . . I don't know. Just old and picky, I guess.
Gotta get ready to go out and pay bills and such like. Nice chatting with you. I miss it.
I really do hope it raises to the level of Black Lagoon.
You know, in 2011 I didn't rate anything a 10 and only found two 9's. There were a few 8's, which for me is very good, 7's are good, 6's are o.k. but "squishy", etc. Damn, I dropped a lot of stuff.
I'll give it some consideration. Just saw the first ep of Sakamichi no Apollon and of Jormungand, and am really liking them. SnA could be a bit like Beck and J a bit like Black Lagoon. Uchuu Kyoudai is a bit like Planetes. This is shaping up to be the best season in well over a year, well to my taste anyway. Was all set to watch Eureka Seven AO but it's not dubbed yet. Looks good though.

Just finished Mardock Scramble 1. I liked it. Very dark and violent. Disturbing, even. Kind of an X rated Kite meets Ghost in the Shell without it being hentai. Dark and nasty like some of the old 90's stuff but with beautiful art and animation. Still, not one to watch with people you don't know. But, wait until you have the second movie all lined up and ready to go because it is a real cliff hanger. As I don't download and can't find a streaming link for movie two, I'm dangling from the cliff. . . . damnit.
Oh, it goes back farther than that. For instance, the hand held citrus juicer was a favorite of the British Navy for reaming limes so sailors didn't get scurvy.
It is indeed true that traditional Japanese dress really faded into the background after WWII. But remember that prior to WWII the Emperor often appeared in western attire and that the military was very western in presentation. Throughout history civilian attire has been influenced by what the military was wearing.
