RATING GUIDE
I try to rate from 3-10 & watch shows that I think I'll score high because I generally have pleasant viewing experiences watching anime! From a 1-5 scale of stars, here's the breakdown of how I score.
★: 3-4
★★: 5,6
★★★: 7
★★★★: 8,9
★★★★★: 10
10s: Personal all-time favorites of mine that I consider to be masterpieces of the genre; the best of the best. These characters & their stories have affected me greatly, surprised me, impressed me, encouraged me, or challenged me in some way, & I'm different because of them. These usually tend to intertwine with my day to day life. No anime is 100% flawless, so my 10s are pretty much my favorite 9s.
9s: Reserved for really solid & enjoyable anime that left a strong impression on me. Anime under this category usually have a "moment" or a string of "moments" that set them above the rest. Usually elicit strong reactions such as laughter, fear, anger, sadness, pure shock, or straight-up happiness. I'll have an emotional connection to the characters, the memories come rushing back when listening to the OST, OR I found the writing, animation, or atmosphere to be particularly impressive or distinct.
8s: Generally, if I really liked the anime & have few grievances with it, it'll be placed here. 8s are entertaining, well-written, & possess their own unique identity. I'll remember them fondly & would be willing to rewatch. Great & memorable, and easy to recommend.
7s: "It's pretty good BUT..." These are a bit trickier to categorize, but 7s are typically one of the two: still enjoyable but possess clear inconsistencies, questionable writing, a disappointing ending, etc. OR an overall positive viewing experience, but not as memorable, unique, or significant as 8s. Good, but nothing life-changing, but I can see how someone else could love it.
6s: This is where the quality (or my enjoyment) of the show starts to noticeably decline. I usually like everything I watch because I'm easily impressed & try to find the good in all anime, so 6s are on the cusp of mediocrity. Usually, the "anime" anime fall beneath this category.
5s: Meh.
4-1s: Not a complete piece of trash, or maybe so... could even have some redeemable moments...but there's usually something terrible that's hard to overlook.
