I do ~95% of my anime-watching alone these days, especially now that I'm not on the MAL app and discussing it regularly. My wife and I watch some stuff together, but it's so hard to find things I think she would like haha. Maybe one of these days we can all watch something together (or at least have regular discussion threads) in the Discord server. Remind me to suggest this before the new seasonals start!
It's insane when you see how much work some of these VAs have done. I met Cynthia Cranz at a convention yesterday (I'm not bragging, I swear! haha) and she talked about how back when anime first started being dubbed that it was effectively the same small group of people doing all of them. Once you were "in" the group you just got invited back for every show. I've honestly never seen the original Kenshin subbed, so obviously I'm going to recommend going with the dub since it's so iconic.
I definitely have a convention addiction haha. The first one I ever attended was this past March, and I think I've been to another five(!) since then. Thankfully there aren't any scheduled near me until next January, and I might even pass on that one unless my friend invites me to go with him. My dream is to get a bunch of MAL people to attend a con together, so if you're serious about wanting to go and meet some people you should message me and we can set that up! Plus the more people we get, the more peer pressure we can put on the others to join too haha
The reason the OG dub is my favorite anime ever is because me and my dad used to watch it together when it aired on Toonami while I was a kid. Every so often when we talk on the phone he still brings it up, so it's definitely a big part of my childhood and our relationship. It's 95 episodes and the last 30ish are filler, but the whole thing is just so good that it's well worth the investment. The remake is supposed to adapt the entire manga this time around, but I have so much nostalgia for the original that I don't think it could ever live up to the hype for me.
The VA I was talking about is Dorothy Fahn and she's been in a ton of stuff. I made the mistake of bringing up the remake when I met her, so I immediately changed the subject since she didn't seem happy about not being invited to reprise her role as Kaoru haha. I've also met met Lex Lang ('90s Sanosuke) and Ben Balmaceda ('20s Aoshi) at other conventions, so I'm not sure how they feel about the versions they're not in.
I didn't even notice you had the Kaoru profile picture now. I actually got to meet her dub VA from the original series at a convention recently and she was super nice.
The original Rurouni Kenshin is my favorite anime ever, but I only just started watching the remake. Assuming you've seen the remake, what did you think about it?
