Regarding your question about FMA and FMA Brotherhood.
I'd say drop FMA and start Brotherhood. If you decide you want to watch both, then still watch Brotherhood first. They pull too much bullshit/injustice on characters like Hohenheim, Bradley, Scar, and Roy in FMA. Not to mention great characters/events from the Manga aren't even in the story.
It's better to have an image of Brotherhood's portrayal in your mind first (The author herself would want that too), and then watch the other for the sake of watching it. Not the other way around, it will mess up your mental image on events/characters and perhaps leave a permanent bad taste, imo.
So just stick with Brotherhood, and if you must watch the other (which should still be a good watch), Brotherhood should still come before it for the sake of your first impression.
