Favorite Characters 11-20 (There are so many great ones! Not necessarily ranked by quality, just how much I liked them.)
11. Alucard (Hellsing) - nuff said
12. Midora (Toriko) - A great villain with awesome charisma, abilities, and backstory. I wish the Toriko anime got a better adaption man!
13. Yoh Asakura (Shaman King) - Normally I don't like his sort of character, but idk something about his design and chilled-out attitude is really cool to me, and he really helped me enjoy the series, which is underrated imo.
14. Light Yagami (Death Note) - Excellent example of a villainous protagonist and a realistic depiction of how absolute power corrupts absolutely.
15. Daiki Aomine (Kuroko No Basuke) - Aggressive and relentless in his training. His attitude and feats are simply inspiring.
16. Trafalgar Law (One Piece) - One of the best additions to the cast especially in new world. Suave, calculating, yet he still has some of the silly quirks that make him a great fit in the world of One Piece. His abilities are also really interesting. Oda really raises the bar when it comes to shonen superpowers.
17. Son Goku (Dragon Ball) - His positivity, adventurous spirit, and hardworking attitude have inspired me in my fitness journey, and I think he's great. I like Luffy more, but Goku personifies the training and the spirit of the athlete, and that distinguishes him. I am also referring to Goku as he was depicted in Ball and Z, not Super.
18. Alexander Anderson (Hellsing) - Hellsing has surprisingly fleshed out characters for a show that is at days end about ultraviolence and edginess. Anderson is a fantastic foil to Alucard, a powerful antagonist who also has sympathetic points. He also gets the best fight in the series, and frankly things go a bit downhill after he dies.
19. Cell (Dragon Ball) - He's a creepy, warped reflection of the heroes and past villains, with a very striking design and memorable dialogue. I like him because he was one the first villains I had encountered with a troll sense of humor and a Machiavellian, forward-thinking intelligence. I love his theme song in the english dub as well.
20. Genjo Sanzo (Saiyuki) - He's an unusual main character - jaded, sarcastic, burnt-out, and utterly done with the usual frills of the genre he finds himself in. And yet, he's the first one to spout action movie one liners in the heat of combat. Say what you will about the series' overall quality, but Sanzo is cool.

9. Hiroto Honda (Yu-Gi-Oh - The character has no purpose in the story but is in every episode!)
10. Neito Monoma (My Hero Academia - he's actually not that bad, but still a bit annoying and seemingly has little role in the overall story)

But I wanted to see what others say before I end up repeating the same things.
You should review the Cooler movies O:
The plot wasn't very promising at first, but it started to become interesting in the 2nd season. This makes sense, because they had to introduce the characters in the beginning, but maybe they made too many filler episodes. Personally I didn't mind them at all; simple funny episodes are the main reason why I watch YuGiOh and other shounen series. However this one offered me more than just entertainment.
The characters' development is in my opinion the strongest point of the show. Seeing how the protagonist grew up from a kid who just wanted to have fun, acted before thinking and hardly took things seriously to a self-conscious and very responsible person with a strong character was very interesting. He discovered and fought the evil inside himself and instead of trying to banish it -like a kid would have done- he accepted it as a part of his personality and put it to "good use." I think it's obvious that my favorite season is the 3rd! :D
However in the last season Yubel's influence made him an inhuman being that couldn't be corrupted by the darkness like the rest of the world. That was cool, but not realistic leading to a lack of character development in his person during the last season. That was balanced very well though by the focus on the other main characters, their dreams and their despair. In particular Jun's and Shou's struggles on their paths in life touched me. The characters were so relatable in their situations that sometimes it was like looking at my own problems through a mirror.
While Duel Monsters is about epic battles and more basic values such as friendship, GX outlines each character as an individual and shows their conflicts. Evil is no longer an external factor -even though it is kind of represented this way through the Light of Destruction and Darkness- but its actual source is each individual. The battle between good and evil now takes place inside people. At least that's my interpretation of the show.
The art wasn't bad considering the age of the series and the music was amazing in the original version! I'm glad I had to watch season 4 in Japanese and wish that I had seen the whole series with subs. I was overwhelmed by the soundtrack, the opening and ending theme of the last season; they are so catchy that I keep singing them even now. That being said, 4Kids' soundtrack was remarkable too, especially in the 3rd season.
As for the card games, I enjoyed the majority of the serious duels, especially Ryou's duel with Yubel that left me speechless with how intense it was. Of course there were many boring ones following the rule of "one duel in each episode," but they were usually entertaining. I like how they introduced one-turn kills (OTKs) and zero-turn kills (ZTKs) too. The game mechanics were generally not hard to understand and -unlike today's duels- the effects and combos were relatively understandable, so I didn't have to skip backwards too much! :P
In my opinion the biggest flaw of the series is the big amount of fillers and how slow it is. This usually doesn't make the show attractive for older audience who look for "more serious" and faster anime. Thus it's very hard to recommend it to anyone, unless they love the franchise or they could use a 'light' show. Both apply to me; GX wasn't too hard to follow, although I was watching it mostly during my dinner after school when I was very tired, so I can say it certainly served its purpose in my case. Eating could be boring, if you are alone. I'm glad that YuGiOh GX lit up my evenings.
hope you're doing great! Thank you for accepting my request. I added you after reading your review about Yu-Gi-Oh! GX that I found very interesting. I share your opinions on the show and although I'm watching the dub I still appreciate how good the anime is. I have noticed that GX -unlike its prequel- is not all about the ultimate battle between good and evil. Instead it goes deeper with the great character development and its stroke of existentialism, like you said. The show touched me, because I can relate to the dilemmas and inner struggles on the endless and difficult road to adulthood.
I'm now moving to the 4th and final season and I'm looking forward to a great conclusion!
Thank you for posting that review; it described with words my overall impression so far, that I couldn't put into words, and expanded my understanding of the deeper messages that this series has (I have to admit I was a bit astonished at the ending of the 3rd season).
Have a great day!
