I'm a Japanese media consumer that consumes media that are finished airing/publishing etc. However i do watch airing anime or read publishing manga sometimes.
For manga that are still publishing, I'm reading in "Arcs", not volumes since most of the time i will forget most of it when the arc is still running for a year or so.
Rating System
I rate anime, manga and visual novels with my overall thoughts about it. If i think it's good i give it a 7, if i think something is bad i give it a 3 and if it's average or mediocre i give it a 5.

Not listed series
My progress on anime, manga etc. That isn't listed on MAL. I wish that MAL add these to the database for extra convenience.
Anime
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off - Completed - Score: 7 - Started: 12-05-2024 - Finished: 15-05-2024 - Fall 2023 - Watched -
Is it an Anime or a Cartoon? In my opinion, it falls in the middle. It doesn't feel like a cartoon but not entirely Anime either. Which makes it unique.
At first, I thought the story mainly revolved around Scott Pilgrim defeating an Evil Ex of Ramona every episode, but thankfully that was not the case. It had some nice twists and turns (nothing extraordinary) that kept the story from getting too boring.
It had some game and nerd jokes from this era (2020's), while the story is much older (at least 2006 because there was a live-action movie of it around that time i think). I think this is due they wanted to modernize the show.
I can also appreciate the Rock music, it wasn't too idolized or too mainstream. Not that it was very good or anything, but it was better than the average Anime show that has it, I believe.
However, the story's style was definitely American in terms of relationships which I find less appealing compared to Japanese style of relationships.
The show only had English dubbing, which was good enough. My only issue was that the voice acting of Ramona was not as good compared to the others. As for the animation, I had no complaints. It fit this type of show very well and didn't feel like the production quality was declining. It was solid.
The story was overall entertaining for me, but not amazing. I think it was good. I give it a 7.
Nice, sounds fun. I should check out one of those - maybe Fuji-Q - next time I go. Been a while since I've done thrill rides, rollercoasters and the like. And yeah, I really enjoyed the mountain climb (mt. Takao) I did near Tokyo too.
Awesome, glad to hear you enjoyed it. Yeah, I find myself getting lost in Book Offs and the like for hours and hours too haha. Beginning to build up a decently sized bookshelf collection because of it now whenever I go there lol. And since I've been studying Japanese for 3 years now, I have more of an incentive to actually get & read stuff in Japanese too now. Ah, I didn't actually go to any amusement parks there - how were those?
Yeah, I can relate with the sushi - spent quite a few meals on Sushiro and Kura Sushi as well. When the cheap chain restaurant sushi in Japan is just as good or better than the 10x more expensive restaurant sushi abroad...
I remember you mentioning you would visit other cities as well. What did you like the most outside of Tokyo?
That sounds great! I did also visit Kansai area back in 2016 (my other, first trip to Japan) - Kyoto, Nara, Osaka. Do indeed remember visiting quite a few temples in Kyoto, and Osaka had some really great street food (I'm especially partial to takoyaki).
Hmm, Tokyo. Well, for sure Akihabara was a day-long adventure for me at least. I can spend too much time browsing around, and especially spent a lot of time looking for stuff in the secondhand shops/bookstores that have some insane deals for manga/goods/figures/etc. If you like museums (or also just want a nice big park to walk around, Ueno Park is very nice. There's a few rather big museums there as well as a zoo (that I didn't check out). Tokyo Skytree is great of course to see an impressive view of the whole city from up high (and the only time I saw the outline of Mt. Fuji from Tokyo), and felt ideal to do at sunset for the colors & then also see the lights at night all come on across the city. Senso-ji which is nearby is one of the other popular tourist places, but I highly recommend just going there at night if you do visit it. Way less packed with tourists, and the temple lights up so it looks even prettier imo. There's plenty other places you could also visit - like seeing more of the city life in districts like Shibuya, etc. But yeah, hope some of that helps.
Oh cool, that's awesome! A month is quite a bit of time indeed, that's sure to be fun. Tokyo is so massive that even 8 days felt like just scratching the surface - though I did also spend a couple days somewhat out of the big city & one day hiking up a mountain too, which was a nice change of pace from the city. Whereabouts in the country are you planning to go?
I'm a bit late, but happy birthday man! Hope it was a good one.
I just got back from my second ever trip to Japan here (8-9 day trip mostly in Tokyo), so still feeling the blues of being back but also glad it happened.
Yeah... ideally there would be primary entries of main series, and subcategories for individual seasons - ability to rate & sort each, etc. I can't imagine MAL will implement such a drastic change though unfortunately.
Hm, I see. Yeah, despite being a fan of several of the anime, I never actually properly read a Key VN beyond a few hours - trying to start that with Clannad now. Though my pace will likely be slow as I'm juggling that with several other VNs, and also reading (again, slowly) in Japanese, and also not necessarily dedicating a whole lot of time to it. Tends to be a bit random when I'll read for a bit or not.
Ahh, Runescape. That certainly brings back ancient memories. Ever since then I barely played any MMOs, though at some point I do want to properly play through FF14 as I've heard great things about its story - especially in later expansions. Can't say for sure when I'll actually get around to that though... afraid of the time sink indeed.
Yeah, AoT certainly is taking its time to finish. Almost feels like a meme how many new entries are billed as "The Final Season" (part 1, part 2... etc.). I didn't even bother doing the last couple of installments yet either - at this point just waiting to finish it after it's all finally out as well.
I see you read some VNs. Out of curiosity, anything you've been reading or read lately?
Yeah, that's totally fair. I had a period of 5 years or so where I struggled to ever watch a single airing anime past the first couple of episodes, though I was also watching less in general across that period.
Since getting back into seasonal anime this past year or so (and actually watching them week to week mostly), I've been having fun though. Of course, I may tire of it again some day or later again as well, or the interest in doing so may likely ebb and flow. What I do like about it though is the vague sense of community and open arena for discussion/discourse that you can get with watching stuff as it airs. I also tend to have some nostalgia for past seasons when I look back on the collective number anime I watched during it.
There's some shows indeed that I just can't do that with though. Attack on Titan immediately comes to mind. The urge to binge it is too strong, that whenever a new season comes out I'm compelled to just wait until it's finished so that I can devour it all in 1-2 days. And yeah, I have a feeling that after doing ~15 anime in a single season like I'm doing now, I'll probably want a break from the grind to some degree next season lol.
Yeah, it was the anime I was most hyped for from the trailers as well! It's definitely in my top 2 for now, and slightly gives me Shinsekai yori vibes.
The amount of anime I'm trying to watch this season is pretty crazy... by far the most I've ever attempted. The season seems kind of stacked in general, but also I just randomly had the inspiration to try doing so. Just dropped one of them after 3 eps, and hopefully I'll drop a couple more tbh... not sure if I'll be able to keep up with everything otherwise haha.
