TTGL wasn't made by Anno, you are thinking of Neon Genesis Evangelion (which is actually a good show, unlike TTGL)

The two shows were made by Hideaki Anno and have a similar feel. They are both love letters to good old super robot shows of the kind Go Nagai wrote, but they also have great dramatic moments.

Fyi Anno did not work at all in TTGL, not even a minor role. He already left Gainax by then.
