Cluck cluck, it's your friendly neighborhood space chicken. It's arguable to say i'm a high rater, but certainly don't vote low. Mainly because a 1 to me requires the same realm of failure as Abunai Sisters, which is a rigid standard for what is truly pathetic. Rather, I like to be realistic about my ratings. There isn't that much hot garbage and there are a lot of masterpieces. So here is the rundown of my rating system.
1 - Absolute Joke: The legendary Abunai Sisters class reserved for animes so bad that it's a joke how bad it is. A bad so widespread that no person could find this good, and anyone who rates it positively are doing it for the memes. This level of bad fails all aspects of anime.
2 - Catastrophe: I'm physically angry for watching this. Not because some event pissed me off, but the quality of the anime did. Frowning 24/7 until wrinkles are engraved into my skull, it is unwatchable because it simply fails too many aspects of anime.
3 - Hot Garbage: Burnable trash goes here. The smell of disgust emanates my very soul for watching this. To such a severe degree that I cannot get rid of the stench, even when I drop this garbage. I am only filled with afterthoughts of how bad that experience was.
4 - "What the hell is this?": Finally pushing beyond the abyssal realm, this could be a decent anime that could actually pass as an average anime. Except for the fact that the plot is pissing me off. This is the rating that most harsh critics would consider a 1 in their rating scales. It is not horrendous, but it pisses me off in a way of how the story was told. It is different from a catastrophe for the fact that I consider the anime watchable in the first place.
5 - Meh: I am visibly disappointed for watching this. My eyes have been glazed over for eons. This is BY NO MEANS, "average." Average animes are better than this. It's the kind of disappointment where someone vehemently recommends something and you simply don't get where all that hype is coming from after experiencing it yourself. As a result, this is typically the rating I start animes with a bad first impression, then I adjust it as I continue.
6 - Okay: I get it, but I don't like it. Much like the meh, except I can feel why that person was hyped. This is the kind of anime where I go, "Eh... it was aight." This is pretty much where most average animes fall that I didn't really resonate with.
7 - Yay: Oh look another episode, better watch it. At this rating, I actually look forward to watching the anime. As a result, most average animes are 7s. Cause lets be real, why the hell am I watching something I'm not looking forward to watching? These animes have their own niche, but I'd hesitate to be a fan and call this shit good.
8 - This Shit Good: This shit on other hand, is the good shit. You know there is better shit, but that cheap low quality good shit is what people call the good shit. Cause if it was truly good, I wouldn't call it shit. There are things to like about this anime. Still flawed, but sometimes I like those flaws. Though since I'd consider them flaws, I can't really consider it legendary.
9 - Monado Power: Cause I'm really feeling it. This is where the masterpiece class begins. No fancy art, studio, music, director bias. Just sheer member of the audience bliss. This anime is what I consider amazing and draws me in despite its flaws. It is the rating where I place animes I truly believe belong in the category of greatness. It is an anime I can shamelessly praise since it truly is amazing.
10 - Halo Effect: Yes, I'll be honest. The 10s I give aren't really the best. They are influenced by an amazing turn of events within the anime that grants me the halo effect to snuff out all flaws. Thus you can find many of my 10s to be quite flawed animes. However, I find that if an anime is able to hit me with the halo effect that persists until the end, then that alone is quite valuable. Even a masterpiece that is utterly flawless is less valuable to me than an anime that hits me with the halo effect. That is because if a masterpiece is unable to hit me with the halo effect, then I did not resonate with this anime.
My rating scale may not be dictated by the greatest of logical greatness, largely influenced by the way it makes me feel. I also avoid letting any preference, in who it is that makes it, get in the way of my ratings. While this may be quite flawed and unreliable for grading masterpieces, I am not in the business of making a tier list for classics. What makes this grading scale useful is how well it can be applied to hentai. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
If you are looking at my ratings to see something you might like yourself, then I suggest checking out anything I've rated an 8 or a 9. These animes are typically my most unbiased perspective of what is truly good. I don't recommend taking my 10s too seriously. While they can certainly be a masterpiece, I am usually ignoring the flaws of the anime to praise what I believe to be a compelling value that it offers. Aside from that, try to find things you personally resonate with. Our opinions will differ and that is normal, but what is important is that you find something you love yourself.
Hentai really can't be judged on the same scale as a masterpiece since it serves a different purpose. The way it makes you feel is certainly quite valuable itself when compared to anime and to put it on a disadvantage merely for being a hentai is truly a shame. A travesty even. Thus I don't judge them on separate rating systems, but rather accommodate one rating system for all anime.
I make it a point to rate everything I watch. Anything on my list that is unrated means that I have not even watched a single second of it. There is no need to form a complete opinion nor purposely withhold rating. What is important is honestly presenting how you feel about what was seen. If you find that things get better or worse while progressing, it only makes sense for the rating to change as well.
Anime that are On-Hold for me are really just anime that doesn't have a completion date or ones that I am temporarily incapable of watching.
That usually means hentai.
Otherwise, media that I consciously delay are considered dropped. That is because the simple act of prioritizing something else over watching the anime means that it's become a non-priority. The whole point of anime is to watch it on free time, that's as low priority as it gets. If I prefer doing some other low priority stuff rather than chilling and watching the show, then that show is practically a non-priority.
That being said, something that has been "dropped" can be "picked up" again. So it's not exactly a trash bin.
Anime, manga, manhwa, manhua, light novels, novels, art, and music are all part of the arts. They are different mediums, but they are reviewed the same. Yet the way they are reviewed doesn't truly match the 1-10 Star rating system at all.
Why is it that comparing what the best anime is can be so difficult? Especially when discussing it amongst ourselves. That is because there are different tastes that are fulfilled. Ice cream tastes good in its own way and steak tastes good in another. Yet if you use the same metrics you used to rate steak highly on ice cream, ice cream would be rated poorly on the steak scale. The same is true vice versa.
Ultimately we are subconsciously aware of the way we rate things like this, but to make it clear: we assign point values to the pros and cons we see in all forms of art. Since there are many ways to achieve the status of good anime it's more accurate to see these ratings as benchmarks. Anime get points for good things and loses points for bad things.
These things are objective truths about an art, and the only subjective part is how we value these things. Do they fit our tastes or not? Ice cream being sweet can be a massive pro for some and could even be a con for others.
That being said, what is truly important for rating the arts is being aware of the many kinds of things that makes up a work of art and having a solid reason for the value you assign to these points. The mark of a truly good reviewer in any artistic form is someone who considers multiple points in both the pros and the cons and has justifiable reasoning for the weight of each of these points.
So if you are hesitating on ratings or fear being judged poorly for your ratings, just keep in mind this is the way reviews are truly held and that our star rating system doesn't truly encompass everything. Everyone is free to interpret the star system the way they want, but this is the true system behind how things are rated and this is ultimately the most important thing to know. So long as you are aware of the points you are judging and can justify your stance on these points, there is no reason to fear your own ratings.
You've got some great taste in anime.
But one thing I don't understand is why you gave Gurren Lagann a 10?
The first and the last episodes were godly but in the middle the episodes were boring in my opinion.
Thank you for the recommendation, but I’ve already seen the whole kanojo series. But thank you for reminding me to add it to my list. I’ll then be checking out Swing out Sisters. Thank you again, your will to help is well appreciated
