'ello! avid anime afficionado, started watching it on TV as a wee little child and it was all downhill from there hahaha.
I'm specially in love with high-action battle shonen and atmospherical, dreamlike, puzzle-like psychological shows, though very sadly we don't get much of this style nowadays.
Mini-reviews on my Completed list's tags, but I only started doing it in like 2020 so click on "Finished" to sort it by recently completed anime
When consuming things, I like to give an equal shot to both highbrow and lowbrow forms of entertainment, since I don't think quality is necessarily bound to one category or the other. Also if an anime is bad, watch it at 2x speed. Don't waste your time with things that aren't worth it.
I'm cherry-picking the anime I want to have as my 500th, 600th, and so on:

Yep! I only refer to their Japanese titles to avoid confusion. I really appreciate what they did bringing back the NES titles with the Pixel Remaster collection, which thankfully names them according to the Japanese titles for English audiences. It also has a ton of concept art and music collections that definitely makes it a really worthwhile remake!
The way you're describing it, FFXV sounds like it was trying to achieve something specific and had lots of appreciable qualities, but the presentation was just unclear or convoluted. Honestly, I'd prefer that and a unique experience rather than have a straightforward and standardized 'good' game, such unique qualities, even if devaluing in certain ways, gives it character. I really value games trying to go out of their way to establish a unique style like that, even if the result may falter in quality sometimes. I honestly love that you seem to appreciate the game for what its trying to achieve rather than judge it for faults, it takes a lot more work to redeem something and find value in it than scrutinize it for flaw. Also I'm curious in how you've compared its ending with NieR Automata, since I really loved its ending. Before reading your comment I was honestly not looking forward to playing it since I read so many negative things about it, but you've completely flipped my stance and I'm genuinely excited and interested in starting it now, so thank you very much for that!
Oh wow! Well, though I had no intent on convincing you, I sure am glad to hear your interest in both Vagrant Story and FFT! Valkyrie Profile is another amazing games with heavy religious symbolism that shares a lot of the same worldbuilding from several Final Fantasy games. I'd think you'd really enjoy that also considering your tastes, though I hope I'm not overloading you with recommendations, hahaha!
Most of the time when I discuss Monster with others, they're really wrapped up in dissecting Johan's intentions and behavior, but I always really focused on the journey and side characters as well. Roberto and Eva were among some of my favorite aspects, and absolutely necessary in establishing certain humanist themes that would be harder to pinpoint if the story focused just on Tenma and Johan's conflict. I especially like Lunge's involvement throughout the story, the contrast of his unrealistically machine-like conduct is somehow very grounding amongst the drama. He can almost be seen as a representation of the concept that logic drives judgement, and his growth as a character enriches this theme to even deeper messages that I really enjoy. Monster's writing is just spectacular, I think its amazing that characters are never really forgotten, their impact on people like Tenma showing up in his growth of character and behavior, such as the Vietnamese nurse, Rung. All these little meaningless filler aspects are surprisingly thought about and prove to hold greater meaning as the series progresses, its just fascinating!
Now that you pointed it out, Gainax really did have a sizable influence on the growth of the anime industry! That's crazy. Hey, that's a very formidable resolution! I really hope you can find a good place earning a living doing what you like! That's the best thing to ask for. I have a list of goals for 2025, but they're a lot humbler and admittedly dumber to be called a resolution; Mostly consists of projects I want to finish, like a VN I'm writing, and a way too long list of anime and game series I want to watch haha. Panty & Stocking is definitely on it though! System Shock too- I am very anticipating to get to it whenever I finish the Umineko VNs, which seems to be an endless endeavor x'D
I've only seen the first quarter of it, and I actually was liking it. There's something charming about the sketchy look Toei used for the show, like despite the limited animation (because it was the '60s lol), there's still a lot of action, there's a neat character arc with the main character himself as he learns to become a hero, and the character designs for each wrestler really pop. That's why I'm sad that the original series is real hard to come by for English speakers.
I liked FF II and III, the story was complex and personal, although overshadowed by some moments of tedious gameplay. I actually watched a lore summary video for the end of III since it was so long. I'm happy to hear IX's your favorite, I think it might be mine as well, though I'm kinda tied with VII. XV sounds interesting from the way you describe it. I'd like to know what parts about it you found worthwhile so that I can better appreciate what you think it does well when I get around to playing it! Because I haven't played XII, I don't know if it takes place in the same universe as Vagrant Story. However, Vagrant Story offers such a complex and enriching world that I wouldn't doubt if they used the same setting again for a different title. And a side note for Tactics, you can definitely see the growth and influence of Yasumi Matsuno when you look at the way he directed Tactics versus the way he directed Vagrant Story. Both are grim, dark, and exceedingly personal humanist tales, but while Tactics goes more politically-themed, strategical, and world-focused, Vagrant Story is religiously-themed, cinematic, and character-based. It's interesting the way he handles the topics differently and distinctively, yet with his trademark precision, care, and use of concise yet meaningful dialogue.
Yes, Trigger does such a nice job with their series! I love their propensity to make original works too. From what I've seen from them, Edgerunners is my favorite of theirs, I think they blended their distinctive animation style and humor well with the cyberpunk aesthetic established loosely from the original game- it didn't seem as if they were confined at all by that setting, but rather excelled through it. I'm really excited for Panty & Stocking too! I haven't seen it but I really want to, and I love it that they decided the bring it back. Looks promising! Definitely, Gungrave is so good and cinematic! It really stands memorable even today amongst so many great series that have come out. There's something so human about it that you don't find often. Monster as well, I'm so glad you're watching that! Tell me what you think or what you find interesting, I'll almost certainly have a comment or two! It's so complex and dense, I can always find something new to appreciate in it. System Shock as well is something I've always wanted to play. I heard it was way ahead of its time with its themes and is still practically a timeless masterpiece! I'm jealous of anyone who plays it, haha. I'll definitely have to start that sometime soon.
And I know I'm a bit late saying this now, but happy new year to you as well! I'm not one for setting one, but do you have any resolutions or goals?
I think the sequel was just much more widely available, especially overseas. Also less episodes to sub compared to 137 let's be real here lol even the Ramenman spin-off is subbed fully. Meanwhile, I'm still waiting to see if anyone's going to return to the original Tiger Mask, that's never been fully available in English. Someone was translating the Italian dub version for a while, but even that stopped. It's sad.
That's absolutely fair, I would do the same sometimes. At some point, as an anime fan, you just make the decision to take in the raws and attempt to learn words and phrases. It's perfectly viable even if you're constantly second-guessing yourself lol. It's kinda fun tbh.
Have a happy new year, man. 2025 should be interesting.
It was no problem at all. Thank you for the wishes as well, I really appreciate it! I've been pretty good myself, Christmas for me was great, and I just graduated from college a week ago, so I've enjoyed the extra free time a lot!
Let's see.. I've been playing a lot of video games recently instead of watching anime, so I feel a bit out of the loop, haha. I've started the Final Fantasy series (I'm very late to the party), playing them in release order, but I've gotten up to FFIX, which I thoroughly enjoyed! The writing in that game is just spectacular. I also tackled FF's sub-series in my marathon, and by far Vagrant Story has proved itself just awesome, becoming one of my favorite games! I can't believe I don't hear about it more, honestly. Can't wait to start FFX and X-2 next, I've heard some good things about them both in particular. As for anime, I really enjoyed Cyberpunk Edgerunners! One of my friends told me they hated the fast and sudden jumps in pacing, but I was thoroughly impressed with how seamless the series managed to accomplish such emotional moments in what felt like an action-packed montage. I don't know if I've seen that in any other series besides maybe Phantom: Requiem of a Phantom, or Gungrave, which are much slower in comparison, so it was a pretty darn interesting experience! But anyway, how about you? Have you seen anything notable lately? :D
Hey its been a while! I noticed that it's your birthday today, so I just wanted to tell you to have a very happy birthday! Also yesterday was Christmas, so I hope you had a fun one too. How have you been?
KKKKKKK, salve. Enfim mais um fã de Fata Morgana. Poucas obras conseguem se equiparar.
Boa lista por sinal, embora tenhamos opiniões quase opostas sobre uma ou outra coisa.
More people need to see it that's for sure! Nightow is such a great writer, I love his work. Merry Christmas to you too! I hope you have a very great and blessed one!
