Exhausting my brain cells towards the study of the mind through an interdisciplinary perspective, integrating psychology, philosophy, computer science, linguistics, and neuroscience- under the general label of cognitive science. Hence my anime taste overall reflects what I study, though I like a heavier emphasis on psychology.
That isn't to say that I can't sit back and enjoy some mindless action without actively interpreting the characters' minds. In fact, I can appreciate creativity in world-building, action, and unorthodox/experimental/avant-garde imagery even when they're devoid of any obvious meaning.

For me, personally, characters are almost always the bigger priority over everything else.
Via my curiosity, I found out that a lot of what he said in that review probably may have stemmed from him being disappointed by what the VE PV (which aired like nearly two years ago, ffs) was teasing. PVs are meant to tease, and what we see in them is likely to get cut, depending on any changes in plans between the PV airing and the actual trailers and debut of the show. Like maybe the staff decided to write the script in a much different persective...maybe there were budget setbacks...can be either or both. The only thing I felt that the show did wrong was not properly wrapping up the situation regarding Violet and Gilbert. Even then, the conclusion was pretty solid, imo.
Lol, sorry I kinda just went off like that for quite a bit, cause I'm mostly into a lot of comedy and action series, and this show, of all things, became one of my all-time favorites.
Like, he does probably enjoy watching shows, but the critiquing is too overboard at times, I'll admit.
