For the first 70 or whatever or so chapters Natsuo only loves Hina, he doesn't even look at Rui romantically, LOL and Rui just has unrequited love. Then even while Hina is away and he starts developing feelings for imouto-chan as she starts making the moves on him because she wants some of what Hine-nee had, it is still Hina that's on his mind first and who he is writing for. Even so when they meet on the island arc, Natsuo still picks Hina. That's like already 100 or so chapters which is more than a third of the manga.
Hina returns at around 128 chapters and her from then on she has just as many and eventually even more development with him than Rui does as she eventually flies to new york around the 200 mark more or less and she barely interacts with Natsuo after, the returns to break up. It's all Hina with him at all the important moments, like losing his writing, manuscript holding, gangsta kidnapping with that coke bae girl. Later on even when he gets with Rui again in 250, it's still Hina at his side during Togen's funeral.
Besides that, Rui and Natsuo's developments involve somewhat toxic relationship that doesn't go anywhere and barely moves the plot along. Hina's developments with him include the very important Tanabe arc , Natsuo's writers block arc and more. Even their casual interactions show how much better they are together.
If someone claims to be an objective reader and still wanted to like this, then you owe it to yourselves to read again and try to look at it from a different angle. There's a solid reason there are still quite a lot of people who like this in other places of the internet and especially in japan where the reception was mostly positive.
Of course he accepted Rui's proposal because she made things easier for him. Hina is just selfless to a fault, she always held her own feelings back for Rui's sake or not wanting to bother Natsuo when he's depressed during his writer's block but deep down she always wanted to be with Natsuo. Why would she reject his feelings?
Rui never ONCE told Natsuo about Hina's feelings despite still knowing, she made moves on him when she knew he still loved her, she leaves him at his worst and acts pretty selfish in their relationship then feels like she's getting in fate/destiny's way whenever she sees Hina & him interact. So her acting as a wingman between the two at the end gives her some redemption for literally for being the most selfish character in this whole manga.
There is no pity, love - that's just a dumb theory Rui fans made to cope. In case there were any doubts, Sasuga went as far as to debunk it in chapter 275 during Natsuo & Marie's convo but people still deny it. Pity love would be asking for him to stay in a relationship with Rui due to responsibility because of an accidental pregnancy instead of pursuing his true love now that he knows she still loved him.
And of course he loves Hina, why wouldn't he? She's been irreplaceable to him in his life, supported his writing at all points, stood by him in the hospital, has better and more meaningful interactions with him and was his 1st love that only separated with him due to them getting caught, not because they wanted.
One good read or re-read w/e would confirm all that. Rui shipping goggles get in the way of seeing this for what it is.
There are always a quite a few people still active on the DnK subreddit that read this story very well and are willing to help others understand it - maybe you should pay it a visit.
A great injustice has been done to this manga & Sasuga for merely writing the story she wanted to write. Bunch of dumb twitter attacks and raging fans because she trusted too much in her audience to see all the foreshadowing of Hina & Natsuo getting back together eventually, or failure to see just how toxic Rui & Natsuo's relationship was and that it was meant to fail.
" What Kei Sasuga has done with the most recent chapters is fundamentally disrespect her characters, her audience, and this story, and I refuse to finish reading it because of this".
despite not really discussing any of the themes presented or taking one moment to understand any of the characters. That's yikes.
