Hi there fellow anime watcher!
The following are the
kinds of anime that I tend to like (and have liked in the past) and that I will always give a chance, regardless if its superficial qualities such as art, animation, soundtrack, and so on are not that good:
1. Anime that do a deep dive into the human condition. Stories like this tend to be simple but beautiful, with a satisfying conclusion that either reaffirms or denies deep-seated ideas and notions. I always love when an anime can actually make me think and philosophize; there is nothing more fascinating to me than an anime (or any other medium really) that is willing to explore the vast mystery that is the human brain.
- Stories that blur the line between what it means to be human or not (i.e. futuristic AI science fiction)
- Stories that focus heavily on one aspect of the human condition (free will vs. environment, nature vs. nurture, judgment, etc.)
- Stories that have more than subtle hints of social commentary especially of these modern times
Examples that I really like: Psycho Pass, Monogatari Series, Serial Experiments Lain
Recent examples I really liked: Wonder Egg Priority, Odd Taxi
2. Coming-of-age. Ah yes, these do tend to be the classic school rom-coms/dramas. Whenever I feel like the world is crashing down on me, I go for one of these to spark feelings of youthful energy and inspiration. It usually succeeds until I need it again a month or so later LOL.
- Romance comedies
- Teenage melodrama
- School slice-of-life
Examples that I really like: Oregairu, Nagi no Asukara, Hibike Euphonium
Recent examples I really liked: none :(
