“Don’t be distracted by the what-if’s, should-have’s, and if-only’s. The one thing you choose for yourself – that is the truth of your universe.”
"If you're gonna dig, dig to the heavens. No matter what's in my way, I won't stop! Once I've dug through - it means that I've won! ... Just who the hell do you think I am?"
"This is Simon's soul! Team Dai-Gurren's soul! Humanity's soul... and actually, it's MY SOUL! Do you seriously think it's gonna be wiped out by the likes of you?!"
"So this is the power of the spiral... Not bad, not bad at all..."
"We evolve beyond the person we were a minute before! Little by little, we advance a bit further with each turn. That's how a drill works!!"
"Mark my words. This drill will open a hole in the universe! And that hole will be a path for those behind us! The dreams of those who have fallen... The hopes of those who will follow! Those two sets of dreams weave together into a double helix, drilling a path towards tomorrow! And that's Tengen Toppa. That's Gurren Lagann!! My drill is the drill... THAT CREATES THE HEAVENS!!!"
Legend of the Galactic Heroes:
"In every time, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same."
“I’d rather fight and regret it than not fight and regret it.”
“No matter the era, whichever the society, people always gaze at the stars when young. Then they stretch out their hands and try to catch them. And then one day, they realize their arms are not long enough to catch the stars, and that’s when they grow up.”
“Everybody has to display a certain loyalty to their paycheck. I was the same way. It isn’t just a piece of paper, but a chain that binds people.”
“Perhaps in this universe, there exists a solitary, absolute truth. Perhaps it clarifies every question. But that’s beyond the reach of these short hands.”
"There certainly are things that cannot be told in words, but which can only be said by people who have exhausted their use of words. Words are like icebergs floating on the ocean called ‘heart.’ The parts that show above the surface are small, but they let us perceive or sense the larger parts hidden below the water. Use words deliberately. If you do, you’ll be able to convey more things more accurately than if you were to keep silent. Right judgement can only be made with right information and right analyses.”
"Don't disturb me. I'm not just dying; I'm in the process of dying. I'm somewhat enjoying that process."
One Piece:
“Inherited Will, The Destiny of the Age, and The Dreams of the People. As long as people continue to pursue the meaning of Freedom, these things will never cease to be!"
"People's dreams don't ever end!!"
“Pirates are evil? The Marines are righteous? These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war have different values! Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right! This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!”
“When do you think people die? When they are shot through the heart by the bullet of a pistol? No. When they are ravaged by an incurable disease? No. When they drink a soup made from a poisonous mushroom!? No! It’s when… they are forgotten.”

“You know, when I was in high school, I was a troublemaker. I hardly went to school. Before I knew it, I was expelled. When I couldn’t go anymore was when I first realized, that school was a great thing. There’s a lot of friends and lots of fun things. When I got this old, I wanted even more to go to school. That’s why I became a teacher. Because, if I become a teacher, I could stay in school until I die, right? That’s why I’m really happy now. I want you to be like that too. I want you to like school. Once it’s over, it’s too late.”
“You think you can just escape? Walk out of this world like it’s some bad movie? It’s too easy to make like a bird. To flap your wings as you chicken out after causing all these problems. The tough part’s walking. Taking what comes along and walking right through it. That’s what real people do.”
"Schools today are teaching useless things. That's why students don't like to study."
"It's such a loss to not enjoy the moment because you're still stuck in the past."

But I just can’t bring myself to do it."

"Don't call a place we all aim for some shit like lonely. Call it extraordinary".
“Manga endings might always be the same. However, when it comes to life, neither you nor I are mere readers. We’re the writers. We can change the ending.”
Eh, I don't really count those 2, since in 2 they are only an item at the end and in 0 you can't really go in hostess clubs (since they technically just started really poping up during that time).
Yep, and because that is the point, I still think it counts. I agree, the rubber bullets do give him...an easy way out, but he still walked in with the intention of killing. And being fair, it's never like the games suddenly treat him like "Oh, you didn't kill anyone? That makes your attempted murder ok!" He still acts and is treated like someone who was willing to kill. And the series never goes in the direction, that he suddenly is good or anything. He still knows, even if he didn't do it, he still killed those 14 men (if you look a bit at how he acts during 5).
True.
But then again, he still tries. It's just...whenever he tries, he messes it up royally.
Yeah, but I get why they cut her out. It would make Kiryu going into...basically japanese strip clubs or dating hostesses weird and make him look like an unfaithful prick. But on the other hand, maybe they could have replaced those then with different activities he does with Kaori? Maybe, but that she isn't even mentioned once (outside of, like I said, 5, where we learn that the Osaka police force hates her, because she worked with an ex-Yakuza)
Eh, it doesn't really do that for me. After all, Saejima was still willing to go in there and shoot those 14 people dead. He still pulled the triggers and their "deaths" still haunt him (him giving this big speech about killing and finding his old boss are probably the most saddest moments in the game). Also, you can argue that, if he didn't do that, they wouldn't have been killed by Katsuragi.
True.
But then again, it is pretty much Kiryus fault. He was the one, who was basically like "You have shown no leadership skills or anything else, that proves you could be a worthy leader and in fact, you are pretty much a hot head...but I used to work for your dad. So here, become the head of the biggest family in Japan (also, don't expect me to help you with that or anything. I'll disappear managing an orphanage and then becoming a cabby)."
Oh yeah, definitely with 0. I swear, the cabaret gameplay of 3 and 4 is just so confusingly made. I definitely am glad, that 0 and Kiwami 2 improved it MASSIVELY.
Yeah and not only that, Jingu definitely just...came out of nowhere. And his two bodyguards where definitely the most annoying boss fight in the game. I do like that we get to see in Kiwami Nishkis fall into darkness.
Also, for that whole "Every cool character except Kiryu dies"...that is a problem I have with the series. The moment someone goes through their important character arc...the series basically kills them off. Doesn't happen to everybody, but it does happen enough.
Yeah, I still consider 2 the best story wise. Even the stupid moments are still awesome, like that one villain just...having a castle made out of solid gold.
Also, I really liked the romance between Kiryu and Kaori (that police woman). And I duslike, how she just....disappears in the 3rd game, so that Kiryu stays single (with the only mention of her being in 5...and it being that the police in Osaka now hate her)
Yeah, many parts of 3 are forgettable. Though I learned, that 1-2 were made by like a famous japanese crime author and all the other games in the series are done by a completely different writer. Maybe 3 was like their first attempt at writing for a videogame?
I actually like the rubber bullets part, but they overuse it so much in the story, it becomes over the top.
Also, with Kiryu fighting Daigo...a Youtuber I watch made a good point about that. Daigo isn't a good leader, he tries to be, but the only reason he even became the head of the Tojo was, because Kiryu said so. He's basically just a punk who got the leadership position because of his father and Kiryu. And Kiryu fighting Daigo (who was about to sell the clan to the corrupt police chief) is him testing Daigo, if Daigo really is a good leader.
The first game I actually played was Dead Souls, way back. It confused me, but I already expected it, since I thought this was part 5. I only learned later that this was made as an attempt to get american audiences to like it.
My opinion on each game is...
0: Contender for the best story, and the game, that made me completely fall in love with the franchise.
1: My first experience, still a good story but 0 and 2 pretty much beat it.
2: Also Contender for best story. Probably the darkest game, and the one, that actually challenges Kiryus idealistic worldview. Kiwami 2 probably has my favourite collection of minigames.
3: The weakest one and the one that went a little insane. I actually like the orphanage parts and I feel like they do show us, what Kiryus fighting for. But at the same time, this game felt...confused. Confused with the tone (Kiryu fighting some black underground organisation), confused with the side-characters (Rikya literally dies after having character-development). Still, even as the weakest Yakuza game it is still good. Also, Mine is probably one of the best written villains in the series and one of the best examples of it's whole "Kiryus idealistic world view vs the villains cold calculation" theme.
4: Great story, but awful pacing. I liked the 4 main-characters and I can easily see Kiryu "giving the torch" to each of them (this was supposed to be Kiryus final game). I like the overall mystery...but the way it's paced is awful, it's only once Tanimuras chapter starts, that we get some actual development. But I still liked, how actually different the 4 were, in fighting, sub stories...even in the way their stories are presented.
Also...how can people call the mystery bad, because "the villains plan wouldn't work?". Like...that is literally the point, Katsuragi and the others thought, they could be some master manipiulators, but in reality, they all were just in over their head. And the only reason their little conspiracy worked is, because they became pretty much the police chiefs puppets and he allowed it. Their whole plot in the game now is, that they are trying to escape from that. And it makes them just as tragic as Mine.
5: I'm currently at chapter 3 part 2 (Haruka and Akiyama). I feel like this time, the mystery is a lot better layed out and it moves at a much better pace. I can't wait to see, how all the characters betraying, that mysterious police chief, Harukas manager ""killing herself"" will play out later.
Also, yeah, I spend way too much time taxi driving, hunting and doing idol jobs XD
For me, sequels will be Jashin-chan Dropkick season 2 and Kaguya season 2. And maybe the new Digimon season (though there I wait for the first reactions, after Tri, I became a lot more suspicious of anything related to that)
Originals...BNA (the new Trigger show) is most likely and the Otome Isekai (I have a friend, who loves both the manga and the light novels).
But otherwise, I'll just have to wait and see, what people will watch, what they'll ignore and base my watching around that too.

Still going with my own watch..."flow" 😂
Since we talked about Yakuza last time, I can also say, I'm currently on the 5th game and already own the 6th and 7th game.
How are you?
