Overly enthusiastic spectator of dozens of competitive sports. Among my favorites are Snooker and Formula 1.
Music lover. Future Funk is my favorite genre, but I also like to switch to other ones, including alternative rock, D&B, techno, metal and OSTs in general.
Animanga
I tend to call myself an all-rounder in terms of animanga genres, but throughout the years I've developed some favorite types. The same goes for the less liked ones.
My favorite genres are (in no particular order) romance, mystery, psychological, thriller and drama. My preferable audience target is seinen. However, just looking at my favorites list, will give you an illustration on how wide is the genre spread of my most liked titles.
I enjoy shows that make me think a lot, invest me into analyzing every single aspect of the story, greatly impress me or those in which I'm very attached to the characters and root for them deeply. In most cases, a perfect formula for those kind of emotions/reactions lies in the beforementioned genres.
As for honorable mentions, I can add here sports and ecchi genres. The first ones tend to be very predictive and repetitve, but most of those that I watched had a lot of uniqueness around them (Major comes first into mind). As for ecchi... Well... Guilty pleasures.
My Achilles' heel is only one particular genre, which is Slice of Life. There are shows that I didn't mind watching and found a fair amount of entertainment, but in most cases I give them very low scores.
As for my reasons... I just don't like series that don't have any type of plot progression. I don't buy the whole 'cute girls doing cute things' type of titles (looking at you Non Non Biyori) so it's hard for me to relate with those that enjoy the 'pure bliss' kind of series. There are of course exceptions, like Natsume Yuujinchou, Lucky Star or Kino no Tabi, but they appear very rarely and always add something beyond the slice of life aspect.
My journey with visual novels started with Clannad and Saya no Uta. Two games so different from themselves, I’m not even sure how I managed to play them both at the same time. Nevertheless, due to that experience, I became a fan of the medium.
I like plot heavy titles, with lots of intrigue, mystery and multi-layered characters. Nonetheless, I also enjoy some more simple and easily consumable galges from time to time.
For me reading a visual novel is a huge dedication, so I always give myself a proper break after each of those endeavours. It varies from a couple of weeks to even several months, depending on how much impact a certain VN had on me (I’m looking at you Fata Morgana).
Regarding galge games. I give those kind of games a complete status when I lose my interest and decide to not play them anymore. In some cases I’m not into certain character archetypes or I have had my fill of entertainment. If I don’t finish all of the routes, that usually reflects on the final score.
Video Games
I’ve been playing video games for over 2 decades. In the early years I was playing titles from almost every possible genre. Among them were Populous: The Beginning, Black and White, Operation Flashpoint, Spellforce and Half Life 2.
Nowadays I still play a variety of different games, but strategies and jRPGs appear the most in my backlog. I’m not a fan of AAA western games with predatory business models, so I very rarely buy them.
I play primarly on Switch and PC. Nintendo’s hybrid console has a lot of great exclusive titles, so I’m very eager to try most of them. I enjoy games that concentrate mainly on gameplay, not graphical fidelity or ‘cinematic experience’ like Play Station titles. PC is my center of operations when it comes to strategy games and all other that are more comfortable to be played on computer.
I sometimes go out of my comfort zone and try titles that only interest me due to their anime aestheics. I don’t care about advanced graphical innovations, I just want to see something familiar and pleasing to the eye. Examples: Code Vein, Astral Chain, Hyperdimension Neptunia and Icey.
Rating System
My ratings are based on a couple of factors - fullfilment, fondness of characters, impact, production factors, etc. I don't think that there's something like a perfect title, so even if I give a 10 to something, it doesn't mean I can't find any flaws in it.
10 - Masterpiece. Something that surpassed all of my expectations and made a great impression on me.
9 - Great. Some extraordinary series that I thouroughly enjoyed and was engaged from start to finish.
8 - Very good. Titles that rise above others in terms of general satisfaction. Score reserved for series that excel above others in a meaningful way.
7 - Good. Something that has a substantial amount of enjoyment factor. This is the threshold from which I can comfortably recommend a series to other people.
6 - Fine. Decent series, which wasn't anything extraordinary, but was fairly entertaining.
5 - Average. Watchable, partially enjoyable, but with flaws or lack of interesting aspects. This score represents the middle point, between good and bad series.
4 - Bad. A title that tried to do something good but for the most part wasn't delivering the expected content.
3 - Very Bad. Series that failed as an entertainemt. They had their moments when I could find some value in them, but it was a rare occurence.
2 - Horrible. Something that had glimpses of decency, but was unwatchable otherwise.
1 - Why does this even exist? Reserved for the absolutely most unnecessary titles that shouldn't have ever existed. Zero satisfaction and zero added value.

So, you're saying that since it was an old quote you'd forgotten, I must have gone out of my way to wade through hundreds of comments to find that one specific comment and post it on your profile?
"Akito's action were just forgiven because she 'apologised'. Sure, multiple attempted murders, bullying, inflicting injuries and mental torture are all fine if you say sorry."
Yeah, she's a terrible character that deserved punishment lol. We can't have that though because of her traumatic past haha. Yeah, I won't argue that most of these characters are sort of useless except to be foil characters to the female MC, but yes, they're basically cookie cutter.
Stellar Blade does suffer from some of the contemporary gaming tropes I admit. But it's one of those games I can just pick up and enjoy the gameplay for what it is with high replay value. I mean in the end, I did have fun with it. It didn't feel like a chore to play like some games I've played in the past 5 or 6 years. If a game isn't fun, it's pointless ultimately since they are games and not movies at the end of the day. The way I see Stellar Blade is like how I see the Zone of the Enders games. Flawed but fun to play. ZOE also has a interesting universe in a way Kojima can only imagine when he wasn't such a Hollywood shill as he is now.
That's cool that you're in a company like that. There's success in that line of industry if the executives manage properly.
Nice job on Unicorn Overlord. 120 hours...I guess you got your money's worth? lol. The last game I played from them was Dragon's Crown. Fun to play with a friend. Not so much by yourself. Odin Sphere (original and remaster) was great too.
Lol. Yeah, when Scottish or Welch accents get thrown in the mix, I'm thrown off too. Funny enough, Eve's VA from Stellar Blade is actually Scottish but she does the British Accent. I think I would've preferred her Scottish accent just for something different lol.
Yup, like you said, Frieran finished off well. It's one of my favorites. I convinced my gf to watch it too. She likes it a lot too.
I agree with your take on Komi. I found it very boring actually--her and the male MC were bland and uninteresting. Yes, I understand your position on Fruits Basket. I think for that one, I sort of judged it within its own demograph/genre (shoujo) against other shoujo I've seen, and it was decent from that perspective. The ending seemed somewhat contrived, but I enjoyed most of it. There were some characters that very unlikable, despite their respective "redemption arcs." I also didn't quite understand the parents' perspective that if your child was one of those zodiac animals, why would you reject the child? Most of them were pretty cute lol. The cat zodiac was sort of a freaky looking pokemon, but the rest were fine lol. There were also quite a bit of shoujo tropes thrown around too. But I'm used to them after shows like Onisama e...
CR is a pretty garbage company, but they hold a lot of licenses, so there's not much options even in the US. Kimagure Orange Road. That one dragged on for a little too long, but I think I preferred the movies a bit better since there's more closure there vs. the TV series. I believe Maison Ikkoku took a similar path too.
Ah yeah, that slave substory in Vinland S2 with the woman and crazy husband was a bit of a distraction. A bit cruel on how she died. But overall, I did enjoy the show.
Yes, I finished Stellar Blade. I enjoyed it but there were some flaws (like all games).
Stellar Blade (I basically copied/pasted my comments from another conversation with another friend.)
Pros
1) Eve is smokin' hot, but you knew that lol.
2) The variety of outfits are nice. Accessories and hairstyles are good too. Wish they had makeup alterations and nail polish too, but that's asking a lot lol.
3) Basically all the female characters are attractive. Some average looking NPCs too, but not purposefully ugly.
4) Traditional gender roles/behaviors, wow, crazy right?
5) Exploration is rewarded. Easy to lose track of time going off the beaten path.
6) Combat is satisfying and fun (the most important thing). Difficulty doesn't always equate to fun. There's enough challenge to keep it fresh and interesting.
7) Boss variety in attack patterns, in behaviors, abilities, and scale.
8) More verticality in exploration.
9) The setting and atmosphere is cool.
10) The OST is amazing. A good choice NOT to produce all the songs with Studio Monaca.
Just a sampling: https://youtu.be/49brMmgtjyU?si=vfgxoSEz-KLQhBYz (gives me the original GITS vibes)
I wouldn't search for the whole OST yet. Some of the song titles may be spoilers, so just a suggestion. I tried to avoid spoilers.
11) Not as grindy. I was wondering if their habits from their mobile game would spill into here and make it a grindy game. It's not as grindy compared to games like Nier Replicant/Automata or FF7R to get the platinum. Nowhere near. I appreciate that they respect my time.
12) You don't need to gather absolutely every collectible. Sure you want to grab the powerups/ gears / nano suits but you don't have to gather every piece of lore (documents/ memory sticks) to get the true ending. An important piece of information.
13) The game is souls-like but it's not as punishing in some aspects. You keep your keep your exp and don't have look for your corpse to get lost exp or anything if you die. So, I appreciated that. There's been some moments where I died in Elden Ring in some very weird spots. Getting my lost points was basically suicide lol. Also gear and collectibles you acquired, but somehow died in the middle of, you still retain that stuff. So, less of a headache thankfully. I can't remember of Elden Ring did that?
14) I don't know for sure, but I think the game will have high replay value, but I have to see for myself.
Neutral
1) Platforming lol. I already complained about it. There are a handful of sections that really just frustrated me. I feel like the joystick sensitivity is a little too high and needs to be tightened a tad more, to give that extra bit of precision. But for the most part, the platforming is fine.
2) Similar to above, sometimes Eve's proximity to grab a bar or rope is off. Like sometimes she will grab the bar from a slight distance but other times I would be in that sweet spot for her to grab it, but she doesn't. It's gotten me killed a handful of times before.
3) The Quests are hit or miss. They're broken into two categories (Side Missions and Board Requests). Board requests are the standard fetch quests, but are still worth doing since they're tied to nano suits, items, exp, money, etc. The Side Missions are a bit more fleshed out. They range from interesting to mediocre. Much like the FF7R or FF16 quests lol.
4) The last 4 bosses of the game really spike up the difficulty. It's satisfying when you beat them, but it sort of came out from left field I have to admit. Probably your jam though. I'm not as quick reflexive as I used to be lol. I didn't switch the difficulty down, but I did use "limited-use" revival item for some fights, so I somewhat gave myself a mercy there, but if the game lets me, I will use it since the later phases of their fights can be somewhat bs. Surprisingly, I don't believe I used a revival item on the very last boss (there's two different last bosses depending on the ending). At least I don't remember using a revival item on the harder of two last bosses.
5) I am the mostly mixed about this: the lore, character development, and story. It's not good as Nier Automata. Don't get me wrong, there's enough lore/story there to be interesting, but it leaves you with a lot of questions. But it's not purposeful vagueness to make it thought-provoking, but it's more along the lines to set it up for a sequel. It's somewhat presumptuous and a bit of a gamble that Shift Up left it more open-ended like this in the expectation to get a sequel. Considering the bait and switch they pulled with us under the auspices of Sony. More than likely, Shift Up will get a sequel, but it sort of rubs me in a wrong way that they assumed they would get a sequel and didn't tried to shove more narrative elements here. It felt a little lacking (quests, lore). I think the character development should've been more fleshed out too, but it's still pretty good. But there's enough there to entice you to hunger for more. So, it's mixed feelings. Like I said though, the setting is cool, so there's that.
It's their first Triple A game, so I'm a little forgiving for point (5).
Cons
1) Two open areas we get are the Wasteland and Great Desert. I would've liked to see a more mountainous and woody area for variety, but it's like that for lore reasons, which still kind of sucks. In my mind, the Wasteland and Desert are synonymous. It's like the difference between the Mojave Desert (if you been around Las Vegas or Nevada/New Mexico) and the Sahara Desert. It's the same color palette more or less and it's basically almost the same. Nier had a variety of set pieces. Shift Up could've made those areas smaller and had like one more free roam zone with a different set piece I think (then explained it with lore).
2) A small minority of quests are dead-end. Like you know the devs wanted to do something with it, but just sort of left it in limbo. It's odd.
3) The bosses have phase change invincibility like FF7 Remake. I know you know what I'm talking about lol. If your beta attack would do carry over damage, it doesn't because once a boss hits a phase, it has i-frames. So, you waste beta energy for nothing. That can sometimes be the small difference between victory or getting clobbered in the later boss fights.
Final Thoughts
Overall it's a solid game. I had fun with and liked it (the most important aspects of a game). There's some things that hold it back from being an amazing game, but it's almost there. If I were to score it, probably an 8.5 or above out of 10.
Edit: After going through a quicker 2nd playthrough. The comment about the characters needing to be developed more is reinforced. I was distracted by the side content in the initial playthrough, but the character development needs more expounding. Shift Up is really banking on a sequel, and it shows. Mixed feelings on that because I did have fun with the game. So probably, an 8/10 in the final analysis.
You right, there is a church like route no? I never played it, but watched enough vids and a dude was going for Edelgard's route, and he ended up going for that church's eventually, since he missed in going to the event you can enter her route, something alone the lines you visit with her, her home country or something, and then later on he ends up
having to face her down and kill her even, since without the MC, she has lost her ways
, freaking sad shit.
To get all of that time, you must have taken your time and did a lot of classes and optional content, in my experience with FE Fates and Awakening, the more you engage on it, eventually you will tire of all the repetitive extra content and want to just go and finish the main plot, and for Fates this is a good reason why it took me so long to beat Birthright and Revelations, after I first finished Conquest (and at least 2 years apart to finish any of them), only in 2022 did I finish Revelations, and I got the game and all dlc at release. xD
(so I get what you are saying about 3H)
Probably when you get to Birthright and Revelation you will feel more similiar to what you felt with 3H, loses of assets being resued or similiar plot lines, outside the different scenarios of each kingdom. Conquest was my favorite, because as a first experience, it is surpringly great, I loved the cast way more than I initially could imagine.
So to summ it up, your point is that it is great that 3H has tons of replay value, BUT they should have cut a lot of repetitive content that the routes share, and offer a shorter (maybe 25-40 hours) journey, if going mainly for plot, rather that what we got.
Surprised only recentlyyou played Fates, you played Awakening awhile back and then skipped Fates? The only FE game I have to finish is Shadows of Valentia.
"You're doing a game for years and you alter some stuff right when everyone was able to check out how the product looks... Are you serious?"
I agree. It makes it highly suspect. You have a bunch of people running around online saying "it's just a few pieces of cloth...then they insert typical insult." Which then I ask, why are you concern about people wanting some cleavage--top or rear? Give players a choice then. There was some idiot I read on some site saying trying to assert that people don't know the definition of "censorship." It was a very pedantic argument. Typical example of an educated buffoon that knows too much that isn't so.
"Then one of our designers said "Dude, we want to make a good game for our target audience, not deliver a message for someone who won't even bother buying our product. Let us cook.".
Sounds like someone with common sense. That's good. Well, it sounds like you don't work for CD Project Red at least lmao. They have all sorts of ESG/DEI nonsense going on. But yes, art shouldn't be regulated. Especially, by small-minded people. Their pursuit of DEI inevitably leads to less diversity of thought/experience/expression. You, know the important things that people care about lol. Otherwise the product looks like the same homogenous propaganda the industry is trying to push. It's so vapid and boring.
In my anecdotal experience, you're not wrong about Americans being sensitive to British accents lol. A Bengali-American girl and a Puerto-Rico American girl (practically both were raised in the U.S. culture/ school system) that work in my lab hate the British accent for some reason. I don't mind it but depends on the region/dialect of Britain. There are some ugly/funny sounding British accents like cockney. I have seen the opposite though. My former mentor was a Hungarian woman that immigrated to the U.S. when she was 14. She's an American citizen, but thinks the American accent is ugly haha. As for other Americans I've known, it's basically mostly indifference or an affinity towards the British culture/accent. For FF16 though, Rosaria was based off of mediaeval England, so it makes sense for Clive to have the British accent. People can be goofy some times lol. Personally, I like to see a mish mash of accents. Foreign, British, and American accents. Stellar Blade seems to do a mix of American and English accents. One thing I don't like is fake South Eastern U.S. or Texan accents. It sounds so forced and bad. I don't mind those accents if done right, but it's uncommon to see that in games.
Solo Leveling. Yeah...it's one of those popcorn type of shows you just watch for the action I guess but easily forget. I read the entirety of the web novel. It's very derivative, but I admittedly it does have some cool elements to it. But the story, is very bare-boned with not much to it.
I've watched a good chunk of the original Yamato stuff. I would say Yamato 2199 is better than S1 of Yamato. However, the 2nd season of the Yamato Reboot sucks vs. the original S2 of Yamato. Which was a great shame.
" then don't sabotage yourself by showing uncensored promos, that are basically false advertisement."
I basically agree. The director shouldn't over deliver. Sony should've just told Shift Up to go with the more subdued outfits from the get-go when the demo hit. The outfits are still sexy as hell, but now people see what they could've had, and it is seen as a betrayal.
Unfortunately, I think Shift Up would've ran into the same issue with other Japanese publishers like Square Enix or Capcom. If they went with a Western Publisher, they definitely wouldn't be able to get away with the stuff they got away with at this point. So, Shift Up has to play the political game. We are not privy to the exact details of their contractual agreement with Sony Entertainment, but I'm sure Shift Up has their hands tied. The director/owner of the company still has to weigh out the responsibility to his employees to, so I'm not beating him over the head to harshly. I do think Shift Up did accomplish ripples in the Triple A industry, in the correct direction, despite this not being the absolute victory people wanted. I was telling my friend on here that this propaganda/censorship is merely a symptom of a larger project that's been in the works since the 1960's in the West. Radical leftists have taken over the institutions in entertainment, academia, government, and people let them, we let them. This is been going on for decades. Now they're embedded in the gaming industry. I can recall as far as 2010-2011 where it was really noticeable. Around the heyday of bad game journalist websites like Kotaku. So, it's going to be long battle to take back the culture from these people that like to censor art and silence voices. But fortunately for us, reality always reasserts itself whether people like it or not.
Yeah, my impression of petitions tend to be that they won't work. I think the most I can hope for is that it prevents Sony from doing any more patches in the wrong direction. Maybe it will give Shift Up more courage to push back seeing that a lot of people support them and the original ver. 1.00. At the very least, the petition will serve as evidence that there are plenty of people that don't like Sony's business practices. Will it change anything? I'm skeptical. But the general feeling is that most normal people are tired of woke shit, so we're in a different situation than we were pre-pandemic. And that's not nothing either.
Haha, is that so? Maybe I'll check out the Grimm anime then. I do like those old fairy tales, especially if they're told in the way that JRR Tolkein wanted them to be told.
Hah, interesting that the Polish side of Dubs have improved too. I've noticed that for first time, that I liked the English Dub for FF7 remake back in 2020 over the JP dub. I was surprised by that. Then the same for FF16. The dub for Stellar Blade is solid too although some characters may be a little overacted, but overall solid. I guess Eng dub has come a long way too.
That's very true. The scores can be inflated/depressed depending on the time you access them. I think it would be helpful for the data base to keep the annual mean score, so you could see how it trends over time. Yes, sometimes reboots are better than the original. Yamato 2199 comes to mind for me.
Frieren is giving me a 9/10 vibe right now. It's awesome. I'm hoping it keeps up until the end. Guessing from your comment, it looks like it does.
Honestly, it's been so long since I watched the original Spice and Wolf, so I only have general/vague memories of it. Like you said, the reboot definitely captures the feel of the original. Maybe even better in some ways. I'm hoping the reboot ends up going further in the story than the original. I remember the ending of original being sort of a cliff-hanger of sorts. Or maybe just unsatisfying.
I got about 7-8 hours into Stellar Blade at the moment. I'm enjoying it so far. It can be difficult like a souls-game sometimes, but it's not completely like a souls-game. It has its own flavor of gameplay and it's been fun. The lore seems interesting so far, but I'm still uncovering the story, so I don't know how that will play out. I'm still exploring the wasteland area right now trying to get loot and materials.
Romantic Killer. Yeah, I had mixed feelings about that one. I vacillated between a score of 6 or 7 at the time. The overall story was decent, but something about it was off where I couldn't really enjoy it as much as I wanted. The punchlines seemed to miss the mark for me most of the time. Maybe in the timing or execution, I don't know. The comedy seemed a little forced at times. One comparison of Romantic Killer I can reference is the comedy between Season 1 of One Punch Man and Season 2 of One Punch Man. The execution of the comedy was different even though they both drew from the same source material. The difference being a different staff/studio. OPM season 1 is superior in terms of comedy, art direction, and music direction vs. Season 2. Which is interesting because OPM S1 operated on almost a shoe-string budget.
I have mixed experiences with CLAMP. The last experience I had with them was Blood-C. It was awful. Hopefully your experience with them is better lol.
I agree. I usually use the scores as a guide. To completely disregard them isn't useful because it's survey data that does have a high sample size where the sample population is finding some common denominator that's good across all the user's Likert Scale scores. But yes, it's not capable of meting out specific criteria that may be appealing to you as an individual watcher, so the general scores can steer you in the wrong direction at times. I've experienced that a handful of times over the years. It's immediately evident in that 80's/90's shows tend to be scored lower on MAL.
