I jumped into it expecting fireworks because of all its fame. Ended up feeling more like a damp squib, especially after all the fresh anime I've been watching.
Maybe it's timing (of when I watch it) or my taste, but it didn't click for me.
On top of that Spike's aloofness and mystery felt more annoying than intriguing to me. With so many dynamic characters in newer anime, he just didn't cut it. All in all it just made me feel like people love it for the sake of "nostalgia" which I am also very guilty of with Hellsing
Thanks for the response, to some extent I do agree with what you said. I do feel like the first season was better in all facets of production, but I also feel like the second season is only viewed as being as bad as it is when it's contrasted with the first season. It's almost like if you compare a 70 and 100 dollar steak. Both of them are very good alone, but when compared to each other, the more expensive one will probably taste better. Maybe this is just my bias considering that Mushoku Tensei is one of my favorite anime, or maybe it's because I haven't watched the first season since it came out, but I feel like the every aspect of production outside of the adaptation or how the newer characters function is a non-factor in my enjoyment of the series. Now to that exception, I do believe that there are a couple of gimped scenes, (Rudeus saving Sara in the forest, Cliff's introduction with Elinalise, and Badi v Rudeus to name a few), but I never felt like these gimped scenes were an outright deal breaker to my enjoyment. There might have been maybe 8 of these scenes to varying degrees of error throughout the series, but some believe that there are many more and that the season is an absolute shit show, something that just isn't true. That segment of the review was mainly targeted to those who thought that way, or those who thought that the production ruined the series. Any rating from 7 to 10 is acceptable from people who liked the first season but took issue with the production in the second, but anything lower than that honestly doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.
What can I say? I didn't like watching humanoid animals having sex and being sexualized the whole time like they're sexy fanservice to the audience watching. I don't want to see that. Cringey as hell. If you like it that's cool do your thing but let's call a spade a spade. There's no watching it for the jam packed action or great story telling because there was none.
