I'm a big romance nut. I like to watch people come together and relationship bloom. There's nothing quite as satisfying as watching two people overcome adversity. Of course if there's a bit of supernatural or mecha action involved, it's just icing on the cake.

I'm not too picky regarding animation quality or style, but I do have an aversion to the shoujo drawing style. Unsurprisingly, I'm more inclined to view seinen or shounen romances. Other than that, as long as the story is good and emotions are conveyed effectively, I'm satisfied.

You should read Mimia Hime, a oneshot by Tanaka Yutaka (the Ai-Ren mangaka), and then the resultant manga Tales of Mimia Hime. It isn't romance, and it is (at least so far) more light-hearted, but the tears welled up anyhow.
