Frequently Asked Questions Q: Hey, what do these ratings mean? A: Liking is subjective, so I don't stick to objective critetia. But the best description of how I rate that I could think of is this: I try to assign an anime into one of the following categories, and then choose the exact score based on enjoyment. Overlaps are intentional, as often shows don't clearly fit in one category.
8-10: A really good show whose flaws could be easily overlooked. It is in some way special and provokes strong feelings and/or interesting thoughts.
6-7: A good show. Unfortunately, it either had flows that are not easily overlooked, or didn't provoke strong enough feelings or thoughts to qualify for 8-10. Also, shows which are hard to classify go here, i.e. some parts are 8-10, while other are 4-6.
4-6: Overall enjoyable show, but nothing more, and with its share of problems.
3-: Boring. There's no point in detailing this, as I usually don't start shows that would have such a rating in the first place, or drop them before I have watched enough to be able to grade them.
Q: You don't seem to like battles of wits or intelligence. A: I do. See my manga list.
Q: Then what about Death Note? A: Death Note... It has some good mind games. But I have several problems with it.
1) Sometimes characters are helped by unlikely coincidences, like when
the wife of the dead agent who had figured out that Kira could kill with methods other than heart attack, bumped right into Light
2) Light makes some fatal stupid mistakes out of impulsiveness - not a good sign for a battle of with
3) Most importantly, it failed to engage me and keep me at the edge of my seat. I often didn't care what is happening and what is going to happen.
Q: Hey!!! Legend of the Galactic Heroes!!! A: What about it?
Oh, well, let's see: The story was initially great (8/10 for the first two seasons). While some of the battles were forced, I was excited by the politics, intrigues, and the overall story. However, it then gradually deteriorated to the point that I completely lost interest in it. If I need to summarize the story in the fourth season, I would say dull, forced, and boring. I did finish the show out of hope for some great finale, only to get further disappointed (frankly, I forgot the finale some two weeks after I watched the show). The characterization was solid, but I did not enjoy the (repeated many times) dialogues and arguments. Finally, I did not enjoy its "commentary on the nature of war and history" (although it's not bad), as it didn't show anything new to me.
Q: I like thrillers. Should I watch Another? A: Yes. But I think you'd be better off reading the following from the start (or before you decide to drop it):
Though there are a couple of discrepancies in how fast the Alliance's population grew, among other things, the actual history of the LotGHverse was pretty well set out. In fact, setting out the backstory behind the war through a documentary is one of the most genius methods of exposition I've ever seen.
But even then, that wasn't really what I was talking about - I was referring more to how Yang would often question how currents events would be viewed in the future, and whether he'd be set out as another Goldenbaum. This isn't the only example of this kind of thinking that Yang presents to us, but it's one of the most prominent.
There are several points, but to sum it up as succinctly as I can, it's a commentary on the nature of war and history, how the two will repeat themselves, and how the present will be viewed in the future, once it is history. There's also the individual points behind several of the characters, but you made no comment on them so I'm not really sure where you stand.
