On Scores
I have been an anime fan since 1998. I was fourteen years old when I discovered this wonderful medium and, apart from occasional busy-ness or burnout, I haven't looked back. Over the course of my fandom, I have undergone many life changes, as you'd expect from any adolescent becoming an adult and raising a family. Accordingly, the things I like about anime as well as my criteria for goodness in general have changed a lot as well. The upshot of this is that my scores may not make sense to you. Hell, sometimes they don't make sense to me when I look back on them.
I appear to have three choices:
(a) - Do away with scores
(b) - Watch everything again, now, and grade accordingly
(c) - Live with a sometimes inconsistent scoring record
I like scores, so (a) is a non-starter. Perhaps if I were single (b) would be realistic, but it is also not a live option. This leaves me with (c), and I'm pretty comfortable with that.
So, comparing one of my ratings to another will probably only lead to frustration. Some of these scores are based on feelings and judgements over a decade old, while some are from last week. Rather than engage in arguments over comparisons, I'd prefer to discuss a show on its own merits and talk about scores on a case-by-case basis. If you want an explanation of why this show gets that score, or I rated one show better than another, Tweet me or ask.fm me. I'm always happy to talk about this stuff.
