No that's perfectly fine lol. Clannad is one that is very dear to my heart. And that definitely is more for After story than season one. However I would argue you need the buildup from the first season, to get fully accustomed with the characters to see how they develop into AS. But...no I wouldn't say it was *vital*. First season is them at school, there's a few arcs centered around a few girls, they get together, and then AS is about their transition into adulthood and the hardships that come with it.
Ah, I see where you're coming from. The first season, when treated as a standalone anime, it isn't that good. So I can see your reasoning.
Again, sorry if I came off as rude in the first comment, I mean no harm.
What is that Higurashi review? Thinking that people are into it for cute girls murdering people and only 14 year old girls watch it because they think "yanderes are so cool"? Dude you listed the exact opposite of why people are into this series to begin with. It's a thriller/mystery series at its core, it's not supposed to make sense at first. The second season provides the answers for the unanswered questions in the first one, you're not going to get the same amount of enjoyment from just watching the first season alone.
Also the anime is literally tagged with 'Supernatural', so why are you complaining about a curse being the explanation for all of the events that occur? This is why I suggest you watch the second season, it clears things up and I guarantee it will fix many of the issues you have with this series so far. Objectively, this series is damn good, it has some of the best writing and characters within this medium, I highly suggest you check out the second season, and if you enjoy that one, the third short season will be a nice bonus.
Don't watch the new ones, Gou and Sotsu though, they're fucking awful. Like seriously, if you thought the first season was bad, those two will for sure make you think it was good compared to them. Especially Sotsu. It's horrible as a sequel and as a standalone series. Seriously, avoid these at all costs. Higurashi, believe it or not, is a story about friendship, more than a story about mystery (I might be contradicting my point about this being a mystery/thriller at its core) and Gou and Sotsu completely tear that to shreds.
Note: Sorry if I come off as rude with this comment. I just think you should be a bit more open to this series and give the rest of it a try before giving it a low rating. It's good to try out new things, and if you still don't like the series after watching the second season, that's alright. In the end it's all opinions anyway :-)
Its probably one of the rreasons i felt like I needed to comment something, even if you weren't interested in the series at all, at least to show that not everyone on MAL is that toxic.
And yeah same to you, I generally try too respond fairly quickly.
And yeah, even among ones with very little budget behind them this one stands out as being pretty badly drawn, at least they were able to improve on it a lot with the later releases when they actually had money to work with haha.
And yeah, I can see how that would make the whole thing that much better, it did take me a while before I got really into it too. Thankfully I was watching it with friends at the time and it made the whole thing much more enjoyable even when it was a confusing mess.
I've played the first couple of chapters off of Steam, and yeah much like any VN, its able to go more into detail, but it still is effectively the same storyline, it wont reveal anymore of whats happening until the later answer arcs. And yeah I can see that, the 1st season doesn't really explain anything substantial outside of shions arc, but even then its still mainly pushing the psycho yandere angle. I'm not necessarily promising S2 will fix all you issues with the series, but it does explain everything thats going on and does provide a lot more context for whats happening in S1 in hindsight.
Sorry if this is something you don't care about and you can just ignore me if you want. I saw your review on Higurashi and wanted to clear up one thing, it ironically isnt supposed to make any sense. The visual novel is split between question arcs and answer arcs. S1 is intenionally confusing and S2 drifts away from the "horror" aspect almost entirety, at its core is a thriller/mystery. By only watching the first season, you are missing the whole point of the series.
I probably wouldn't recommend watching past S2 though, at that point it was a complete adaptation, the rest is only really if youre completely invested in the characters and the world (and most fans say aren't very good anyway).
Can't help with the animation quality though, that was always pretty bad, even back then. 😅
