Having a Japanese grandfather (from a town outside Kyouto, actually, but technically in Shiga province, and loving different cultures and languages, I become a Japanophile* early in life. I remember watching Dragon Ball and Gegege no Kitarou on the local Asahi TV channel (the only way anyone outside Japan could really watch anime) and spending my hard-earned

*And no, I don't mean a so-called "weeaboo". That's a relatively new term that didn't even exist until recently, and a purely un-Japanese word Japan, in my experience, just like the non-Japanese concept of "filler" episodes. In Japan, nobody is all uptight about whether an anime episode is a "filler", or "non-canon". There may be the occasional person who is into that, but in Japan anime/manga is a way of life, and it is enjoyed by nearly everyone, not just by otaku. Furthermore, whether something was only in the anime (if it's a manga adaptation) and not in the original manga is not very important. It's all considered part of the same story. Maybe things have changed since I was last there, but afaik it's always been that way, at least in the Kansai/Kantou regions, where I spent about a decade, as well as Okinawa, where I was stationed for a year or so. The Japanese are an amazing and awesome people, and don't get too dramatic about classifying exactly what is "real" or "canon" and what's not. Even so-called "fillers" and episodes that are not part of the main arc or plot are considered a genuine part of the story. Anyway, just had to put that out there. I'm sure I'll get a bunch of haters, but I don't make reality, I just observe and report it, and I say all this with love for my fellow anime lovers! <3 ^^
