I remember start watching anime in my last years in high school. My "first" was the new Vampire Hunter D or at least this movie made me wanting to know what anime actually is. This was about 10 years ago. :) Much has happened since then and I can definitely say I have found the hobby I was looking for without realising it. At least my titles list says so. :P
I'm a fan of more unusual anime stuff. Of course I can watch a good shonen if it cathes my attention, as I did, or a light-hearted comedy, but I often catch myself seeking something more... unconventional in a series. As a long-time viewer I'm a fan by heart of Ghibli, Madhouse and all the studios generally proven themselves in one way or another, but If I have to choose geners - mecha and ecchi are not my types, nor is pure comedy as a whole.
Long story short, my all time favourite is Samurai Champloo. After 10 years of experience and over 600 titles watched, still nothing can beat the taste I was left with after finishing and later rewatching a number of times that show. Recently I find myself liking very, very much josei but maybe I've just grown old so now I can relate more with the characters. :D
