I prefer to rate my pieces of media based on how well they fulfill my interests and less-so on an overall quality. A flawed work can get a 10/10 from me if it exceeds all other competitors in these interests. These are the ten variables I love in a work:
Seemingly contradictory character actions
Chewing over plot holes and character inconsistencies is the most fun I have with media. It is all the better when I provide an absent answer that links chains of distanced behavior.
BALLS
I love people who stake loads of money/their reputation/their very futures on risky endeavors. The right level of confidence and competence with this make pure magic.
'Fights' flow logically
How the win was made, step-by-step, every part of the fight able to be explained. Does not need to be a brawl, but does need to be highly contested.
Some fucked up shit
Self evident; Gore. Abuse. Slaughter of the innocent. Hurts to watch.
Stylish
Any character or background is easily picked out from a crowd. Different and loud. Becomes subjective as too much ruins it, but must depart from generic.
Tragedy
I like to think on a work after completion. Happy endings tend to end my thoughts on a franchise. Tragedies create a natural ambiguity. I should WANT a happy ending when this is done right and I have to fight to search for a way everything could have been avoided. This is best when there is absolutely nothing that could have been done; they were doomed at a base character level from the beginning.
An Abstract World
Meaning both a world diverted from a couple common instances and one that is not fully visible. Societies possessing concepts beyond immediate realistic grasp that thinking beings must develop around. Enough left unsaid to develop my own ideas and conclusions.
Sex and Violence
FEED. FUCK. FIGHT. No logic here. Only serenades to my caveman heart for tiddies coated in viscera. Rape will not sway me away from a work.
Legacy to modern works I enjoy
This gives more perspective to thoughts. They often are pioneers of their era, showing those BALLS I stated further above.
Wastes no time
This can vary. A slow pace can be nice as well. In general, I value my time. I do not need expansive fictional lexicons and histories. Keep it simple, and keep updating drip-by-drip throughout the episode. The fewer episodes, the more likely I am to watch.
Likes are only half the story of one's taste. If you can not find something to despise in a field, you are not truly invested in it. The Hell-List burning below differs from the above Love-List; it will provide examples of popular works here on MAL that I revile. You may love some of these works. This is because we hate each other on a spiritual level. These are the signs where I abandon all hope: Passive Protag
More than having agency, they need to have goals/wants and pursue them. Success is not mandatory, but if a pretty girl they sexually desire entices them and they do NOTHING or have a nosebleed or anything other than smash that puh, then they are proFAGs and I hate the entire series. Nisekoi (anime) has great waifus and nice animation but ---> 4/10
Cowards
When an author teases a gay relationship, or a death, or a betrayal, any tease that could massively sway both the status quo and the audience away from comfort... -then they back down to avoid backlash. For example: Neji didn't die in the Sasuke retrieval arc because it would make Naruto unlikable in his continued friendship of that selfish traitor ---> 4/10
World gets lobotomized
A large world with established rules that has to change reality for the protagonist to win. The villain has the better strategy and has crippled the protagonist, but then someone yells "Friends!" and punches the villain really hard. Naruto beats Neji by punching him hard with all that Fox Chakra despite all chakra being blocked throughout his entire body. Happens a lot in Naruto. From a 4/10 ---> 3/10.
Contempt
The author/director stopped caring, perhaps NEVER cared. They hate your passion for the subject because it means they are forced to continue. This can be funny when I don't care about the work, and the worst media experiences I have ever had when I do. This is why the otherwise "only bad" Berserk (2017) ---> 1/10.
Déjà vu
Anime that looks too much like other anime. Erased has a catchy opening and a decent premise, but it also has this face that I swear I have seen somewhere a1l over other anime --->4/10
EDGE
The distinguishing feature between disturbing and edgy is humanity in the victims and the perpetrators. Neither persons will have any depth or logical progression; they lose relatablity. The innocent are tortured with little more justification then it would be 'so edgy' if it happened. This can be so-bad-its-funny like in Goblin Slayer (manga) ---> 7/10, or totally revolting like in Akane ga Kill (both)---> 2/10.
Children
Children annoy me. Minimize their time on screen. For an example, the well produced and meaningfully directed Graveyard of Fireflies features children for 90% of the runtime ---> 4/10.
Drop in production value
Characters and plot can become a train wreck, yet I will stay on like a passenger myself, til the end of line. But if the animation drops, then so do I. The final of the Evangelion TV series is terrible for this reason and NOT for any thematic flaws.
Not funny
Konosuba makes me laugh. Pop Team Epic doesn't. It is a mystery why this is.
High school setting
Lowest on here, because it can be good. Usually trite. If an anime I have never heard of before has High School in the description, I am very unlikely to even click 'expand' to read further. Which is unfortunate for...
