Also, the tone change between episodes was jarring at times. I actually really enjoyed the first 3 episodes, the scenes at the loot house had some great tension and mystery. But with the introduction of the characters at the mansion, it was like I was watching a completely different series. Tone was a problem throughout the series for me. The villain was so laughably ridiculous, his characterization didn't make sense or fit the tone of the series at all.
I thought some of Subaru's words and actions were inexcusable. His selfishness, entitlement, and obsession with Emilia seriously grossed me out--it reminded me of an abusive relationship I was once in. Those traits should not be glorified in a character, especially the main character, who is someone you are supposed to relate to and want to see succeed. There are dozens of well written flawed characters in anime, Subaru is not one of them.
I thought the short moments of Subaru's nobility and heroism were just plot conveniences--it didn't feel like he worked for them, solutions just fell into his lap. Also, because Subaru was basically immortal, the concept of death had no weight. So when characters died, it didn't really matter in the grand scheme of the story--Subaru could just reset prior to that event. I think this really hurt the show. Steins;Gate, which has similar elements, did a fantastic job at keeping the tension because death had real weight for the main character. He wasn't immortal, and his ability wasn't triggered on death like Subaru's.
Some characters that did redeem the show a little for me were Felt, and the two little cat twins. I especially wish Felt got more screentime, I thought she was interesting and I enjoy tomboyish characters like her. The cat twins were just too darn cute.
There's my two cents. ;3
Subaru was the main fault I had with the show, I found him to have awful characterization. :( He might actually be my least favorite character in all of anime lol, or at least within recent years. It got to the point where I was repeatedly yelling at the TV because of how selfish and terrible he is.
Another problem I had with it was the dialogue, which is typical of light novel adaptions. It was really rambley and cringey for me most of the time.
I didn't really care for the romance, I thought the relationship between Subaru and Emilia, as well as Rem, were quite shallow and not well developed. Subaru's obsession with Emilia was also off-putting for me, especially towards the end.
I could name quite a few other faults, but those are ones that first come to mind~
