well it depends, if is a new series i may consider watching it since i will be watching 1ep week unless it's really bad or something that is not meant for me.
if it is a completed series then i will need to ask a friend, read a review(in case you want it you should check Glass Reflection Arkada on youtube) but if i'm watching it and i just feel like time is slow, that the episode never ends and i have no curiosity to see how it goes or ends then i drop it.
About Sword Art Online, it's very popular(no idea why but ok) but it's fails, in the first season you have 2 arcs, i would recommend you try to watch from episode 1 to 14 it's the Aincrad Arc after episode 14 is just Meh! but if you want you can watch it.
in the season 2 you have Phantom Bullet Arc(in my opinion the best one) from episode 1 to 14. in my opinion if you really find it very boring you can totally just watch those 2 arcs because you will not miss that much with the others maybe some key information but you can live without it after all anime is suppose to be fun :)
Hope i could be of help to you ^_^, if you don't know what to watch i will tell you what i almost every time tell people go to Anime- Top Anime and start from number 1 you will not go wrong doing that(ofc you may not like some since it's all about what you like).
ps: Code Geass is the best anime EVER!!! XD is my favorite :P
Yea to be honest whole /r/anime is rather casual and when they provide recommendations they also recommend pretty much the same casual shit over and over again which then results into people only watching some types of anime which are actually not that good to begin with.
I'm not saying everyone in /r/anime does but most of what I see around there is pretty meh.
Regarding recommendations, through the 3 years that I've started watching anime, I've made my own recommendation list that can be viewed here: http://pastebin.com/ihsUs3ns
Welcome to the anime world, you're pretty much trapped now. That said though I do hope you'll watch some better shows in the long run as you didn't had a good start watching the most casual and rather overhyped/overrated shows. But well if you need any recommendations or insight feel free to ask.
