It depends, and yes, if you give a lower score to a popular anime, you get a lot of bad feedback. Because people don't vote on whether the review was helpful or not, they vote on how much they like or don't like what you're saying.

And I'm not talking about young writers--I'm talking about trolls. Just take a look at any Haruhi 2 review.

Standing out of the crowd means alienating yourself as well. I try not to do that. Also, it's not that hard considering most of the reviews on MAL are terrible troll material.
