I've always wanted to watch anime growing up but I wasn't allowed. Now that I'm older I can start watching. I only saw a few anime growing up since they had to be approved by my parents before I could watch it.

I watch anime because I'm interested of course but I'm also taking Japanese in university and learning how to properly pronounce words is another reason for me to watch.

REVIEWS:

I'm going to write reviews from time to time. I am by no means a harsh critic. I always look for the good in anything I watch or play and tend to ignore the bad. Even if I've seen a similar concept before, I judge without comparison to another anime. However, that being said, I don't give out 10's like candy. Whatever I score a 10, I had to have liked everything about the anime. However, I place extra emphasis on story and overall enjoyment and if I think one of them is perfect and I love everything else about the anime, chances are very high it will be a 10. Here's a guideline:

Story (EXTREMELY IMPORTANT): Has to be engaging; keeping me on the edge of my seat. I had to have had a major urge to keep watching at least once to see what happens next. The ending is also extremely important. If it doesn't end well, I'm not going to be a happy camper.
Exceptions to the rule of stories are slice of life anime that focus on normal everyday life with no plot whatsoever. Examples: Lucky Star, GJ-Bu

Characters (Important; replaces story in importance in aforementioned slice of life anime): I had to love the main characters judging them based off their personality and character. Character development is a big plus. The way the characters interact with each other will also be counted. This is very important especially for the lead role character. Characters should be memorable. Unless an anime is long, there shouldn't be too many supporting characters either.

Art: I am not going to lie; I'm a big fan of "moe"-styled anime. Now, before anyone complains, it's because of the aforementioned growing up. I'm not used to the new style of anime just yet with the thinner lines and more realistic looking faces. Or maybe it has always existed and I only grew up watching those kind of art style anime... For now, to be fair, I will place the least emphasis on this. If I like the style, I like it. If I don't, I don't.
For now: the backgrounds, colours, and characters will have the most emphasis placed upon them.

Sound: I'm still not the best judge of voice actors just yet but as long as I look at the face and the voice matches what I think the character should sound like, that's good enough for me. However, I do know how to judge music. The soundtrack should match what's going on on-screen and it should suit the current mood of the anime. The opening and ending themes should also match the anime. There should be a clear reason why that particular song was used as the opening and ending themes.

Enjoyment (EXTREMELY IMPORTANT): This should be very important for anybody. If you don't like what you're watching, you're not going to have fun. While this may be slightly biased, I have to like the genre I'm watching. Let's face it, we all have our own preferences in genre. What I like may not be what you like. That being said, if I have fun watching the anime, this gets high marks. If I get bored or become uninterested in what's going on, this is going to get a low score.

That's the way it works for me. This is my current way of judging anime. Since it's MAL, I will use whole numbers when I review anime but sometimes my thoughts may be higher or lower. For example if I give something an 8, it may actually be 8.5 or 7.5.
I judge based on the school rating system:
10 = A++
9 = A+
8 = A
7 = B
6 = C
5 = D
4 and below = F

My final thoughts on the year's anime will be featured in my Anime of the Year Awards.
Categories: Best Male Character, Best Female Character, Best English Voice Actor and Best English Voice Actress (if applicable), Best Seiyu (Male), Best Seiyu (Female), Best Song and of course, Anime of the Year.
When deciding best characters, there can only be one male and female per anime. Any other characters that I think are also good will be put in the honourable mentions section.
The same goes for seiyus. However, if they have roles in more than one anime, I put their best roles first followed by their other roles. If it so happens that another seiyu does a great job in that one anime, I'll swap out the characters to make room.
I also post an average score for each anime with the .1 system (grading). Since it's unfair if a series has multiple seasons that could differ in quality when compared to a series with only one season, I take .5 off of series with only one season. I average out the scores between a series' seasons (and movies if there are any). The seasons are out of 20 (8/10 = 16/20) and the movies out of 10. Specials and OVAs are included in a series' rating (if applicable).
