Having watched anime most of my life (only truly discovering the difference between it and western cartoons in junior high), I have seen hundreds, and watch dozens per year now. I have an overwhelming preference for romances and heart-breaking dramas (and especially stories that combine both). Beyond this, all I have to say is how I rate anime.
Firstly, my minimum score is 7. Anything that I would give a lower score to is not worth watching, in my opinion. If ever I do give a show a score lower than 7, it will be a show that I dropped.
7 - As I said, my minimum score. This is the score I give to any anime that I pick up and watch, but do not become so invested in. Typically, I will not give these shows my undivided attention, often doing other things while watching episodes.
8 - My minimum rating for a really good show. The majority of anime I've watched have been given this score. These are shows that I will give my undivided attention to and invest myself in watching. You could call this my average rating.
9 - Aside from being better than an 8, I consider most 9's to be more like 10's, but fall short of my criteria to receive a 10 (I'll explain that shortly). But to be put most simply, a 9 is anime that stands far above an 8, but is not deserving of a perfect 10.
10 - Reserved for only the absolute best. If you look on my list, you may find many 10's. That is not because I give them easily, but because I chose what I watch very deliberately, knowing it has the potential to be a 10 (though in rare cases I go into it not thinking it will be a 10, or even a 9, but am motivated to give it such a rating, usually as the result of an unexpected twist or inclusion in the story).
These are my criteria for an anime receiving a 10 from me. Also note that, due to my preferences being for romances/dramas, my criteria strongly reflect things that are typical of such shows.
- A meaningful relationship occurs or develops into a sexual relationship
- Main characters get married
- A main character(s) dies when everything is going great, or while things are getting there.
But most simply, if it's a romance and it gets sexual (out of serious development of the relationship), or if the main couple gets married, or in a drama, if a character experiences a traumatic event that affects the relationship or one dies, it gets a 10.
