I don’t want to harp on your review for too long, even though I disagree with probably every point you make, you didn’t like the movie and that’s ok.
The only thing that strikes me odd is your obsession with thinking Suzu wishes “for the war to continue”. Why, because she finally snapped after hearing about the speech of emperor Hirohito and her anger overcame her for a few moments? It takes less than 1 minute of screen time and you make it out to be a plot point crucial for understanding her character. For me it felt like in that moment she didn’t know where to direct her anger, because she doesn’t dare to direct it at its obvious source, the higher ups. It makes her feel relatable like a real person who was holding back her true feelings.
Anyways, that’s my take on it. Have a nice day :=)
You fail to understand Suzu is the way she is due to her upbringing- Japanese women are raised to be submissive, quiet, and dutiful. Yet, she is relentlessly mocked and called stupid the entire movie because she is.... shy and not so good at housework. Your review is almost like it is through the lense of somebody IN the movie! Guaranteed, if Suzu was male you may have rated it differently. You mention she sacrificed nearly nothing for the war and "wanted it to continue for no reason", but she sacrificed her body, her dreams, her hobbies, her family, and her common way of life. Although most of her sacrifices were not tangible they certainly were there. Also, in what way is she stupid? She was literally a painting prodigy. Was she just..... too awkward for you or something?
The film plays Suzu's shitty situation off lightheartedly because everybody else sees it this way. This movie does not attempt to take a stance but rather simply retell Suzu's story. Her life was shitty for those reasons, yes, but for everybody else that was *normal*. For that reason I don't think the movie did a "bad job" at showing what life was as a commoner during WW2. Especially one that was not *directly* impacted by the bombing of Hiroshima.
One last thing- you act as if Japan's role during WW2 implies the MCs cannot be innocent, to a degree? COMMONERS WERE NEVER EVIL. Japanese and American citizens during WW2 did nothing wrong. They had no choice but to live under these circumstances and just wanted to live NORMAL LIVES. they were forced to be soldiers, most people had no clue why the war was really happening. I think the art style suited this movie perfectly. It showed the innocence of daily life being mangled by war.
Overall, I feel the emotional toll of hardship the non-combatants had to go through was what got the better of me and caused me to rate it as highly as I did.
