I've been watching anime for a very long time.
Aside from that, I love to read (mostly sci fi, fantasy, or non fiction), write, travel, play video games, and learn about all sorts of topics. I'm also a huge audio and music nerd, I have three sound related degrees, and do music and sound for films and games.

House of Leaves sounds interesting, might check it out sometime.
Anyway, thought I leave a comment, because our compatibility is rather good-looking.
Funny you mention Del Toro, because I love his stuff too (just forgot to mention earlier) and I am looking forward to watching Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. Have not watched Noroi yet, but it sounds very interesting. On the subject of Japanese horror, I highly enjoyed Pulse, very creepy movie with an interesting social message... I have not watched the American re-make, nor do I have any intention too because I here it sucks.
Oh, and I definitely agree with you, the psychological aspect of horrors is the most important part. Even with body horrors out horrors like The Fly; all the personality changes of the main character amplified the his physical changes latter in the movie. I don't really care to much for a lot of modern horrors, because they rely to heavily on nasty violence, rather than careful build-up and tension, honestly it takes away from the fun.
Well, my all time favorite movie is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind... Pan's Labyrinth, Shawshank Redemption, Seven Samurai, Oldboy, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Psycho, and Momento are a few of my other favorites; it's actually a long list.
Rosemary's Baby is hands down one of the best horrors I have seen, simply brilliant. Nosferatu is perhaps not the most terrifying horror movie I have ever seen , I mean it is a scilent movie from the 1920s, but it is bone-chilling; it also set the lay-work for the genre, so it is definitely a milestone. Susperia is a vividly colored nightmare; The Fly is grotesque body horror at its best. A recent one is House of the Devil, which is a call back to horror of the 70's and 80's. The original Halloween still gets my skin crawling, remains possibly the best slasher flick. Then, of course, there is Psycho... still as powerful as it was 50 years ago.
My biggest recommendations would have to be Psycho, Halloween, and Rosemary's Baby, if you haven't seen them yet.
Oh, Princess Tutu continually gets better and better, building up to one of the best anime conclusions ever. There are a lot of things I love about it: the integration of music and story, the play on classic fairytales, deconstruction of the magical girl genre... but largely also because it is a kids anime, I'm impressed someone wrote such a powerful, complex and inspiring show for kids.
So what is your husbands taste in anime? Just curious.
Dantalian could have been much better if they actually developed the characters.
Hanasaku Iroha was a joy to watch, as was Ikoku Meiro no Croisée.
Guilty Crown is off to a good start; great animation and interesting premise. The world seems a bit to close to Code Geass, though.
Chihayafuru is the show I'm most looking forward to seeing of the new shows; shows a whole lot of promise and has a great director at its helm.
