Alright I've got my first draft list sorted. It probably won't change much from this. It turned out pretty similar to yours this time, except some differences where I consider more quantity and lower-rated anime in the totals (even if they don't end up in the video's "highlights"). There's one thing I noticed though, you haven't included IDOLISH7 for TROYCA. It sounds bad but looks like it must be a hidden gem of some kind. Helps their position in the list a fair bit. Oh and I've actually been a bit generous to Toei as their new Dragon Ball Super movie is at 8.29
Yeah I think it's a fair point. Though the Chinese shows clearly resemble anime they do have a different production etc behind them. I'll leave them out for this year too.
How do you feel about including Chinese Studios? They sort of count as anime and sort of don't - depends on how you define anime I suppose. I'm not sure but anyway if we do, G.CMay Animation & Film are looking to be on my list with The King's Avatar Specials (not listed on MAL but in other places they are credited as the studio) and Mo Dao Zu Shi
Hi :) Yes I hope you had a great year too. For me it was just an ok year for anime. I've really struggled to follow stuff weekly. I hope the upcoming 2019 stuff makes it better too ^^ I have not started working on a 2018 studios list at all :O but I certainly plan to be working on it this January. I'm very curious to look through everything and form an opinion.
From what I can tell your list seems perfectly fair! Nice to see Kyoani making a bit of a comeback. Thanks for sharing. And yeah I think I've found some other years where it was hard to pinpoint a winner. It can be tricky to feel confident about the rankings that way. Anyway I look forward to making my own top 30! (Also I'm gonna put Sunrise and Bandai Namco together again so there's one difference).
Hmm, I didn't notice this. It is odd that CloverWorks have it on their website but don't credit themselves anywhere. I'd say to ignore their involvement. Even if they were listed as a producer, they aren't in the animation production side of things so I think it should remain a 50/50 split of A-1 Pictures and Bridge. Unless new details arise, that is. I am curious about how much involvement they have though. Maybe it's just a very minor connection through Aniplex.
Ah sure, yeah I should've looked at the official websites from the beginning. That was definitely the way to go. And also I agree about Ace Attorney S2 now since I've realised that A-1 don't have it on their website. The way they had A-1 listed next to Cloverworks on their website confused me is all.
Yeah this kind of thing is unusual, it's hard to know how to be fair about it. I just think that even before they got their name in April, the studio that became Cloverworks was a different studio from A-1's main studio anyway. And yeah, Slow Start is not too noteworthy but I think they will make an appearance on my list. I tend to list everything and then select things to be "highlights" for the video.
Actually I think I have changed my opinion. On the official websites (both A1's and Cloverworks'), Darling in the Franxx has its production listed as just Trigger/CloverWorks and Slow Start has it's production listed as just CloverWorks. This makes me more inclined to give full credit of Slow Start to Cloverworks and split Franxx 50/50 with Trigger and Cloverworks. Persona 5 is looking to still be CloverWorks alone, and actually Ace Attorney S2 might be a 50/50 split for A-1 and Cloverworks. Very interesting.
AH, fair enough about the past years. I still think it's interesting to see which studios were on top longer ago but I'm definitely most interested in the modern stuff too.
Sure, I mean yeah Cloverworks were there the whole time on Slow Start and DITF it's just that they distinguished themselves halfway through (well, after the fact in the case of Slow Start). That studio still contributed on the first half. Oh and yeah in the real sense of things it will be good for A-1 Pictures to give them more focus and not spread themselves so thinly over all Aniplex stuff. I just meant in the short term listing sense it will knock down some of A-1's overwhelming output rate which gets them so high on the lists
You don't think you will split the credit for Franxx and Slow Start? What is the alternative? Are you not going to list the studios as separate for 2018? Because though Cloverworks did those projects while they were still with A-1, they can't lose that credit when it comes to the year-end since that studio that is now Cloverworks helped to make them. I feel that splitting them is the only fair way if the idea is to list the studios as separate for the year. Idk, unless we do keep A-1 and Cloverworks together as one for 2018 since for most of the year they were... Hmm...
Hi, it's nice to hear from you. Sorry I gave up on the 2005 studios video. My motivation totally died. I'll still make a 2018 one in January. I'm still totally into anime studios :)
I didn't know about this! But I've now read that article on ANN and yeah it seems legit. I guess CloverWorks didn't like their lacking identity so they decided to make the jump. In this case I think we should list them separately from A-1 Pictures. They've probably not cut all of their ties to A-1 because of Aniplex, but they can't be considered a subsidiary of A-1 anymore.
So, yeah, Looks like Slow Start will be getting half credit from A-1 Pictures and CloverWorks this year. This split is probably good because the output rate of the two studios combined would be a bit overpowered. Certainly neither of them will come out on top this year! Splitting FranXX 3 ways will be annoying though. I think in my mind it'll be: Trigger 50%, A-1 25%, CloverWorks 25% on that one. Btw I'm leaning towards totally ignoring A-1's minor involvement on stuff like Persona 5 Animation and Ace Attorney S2 for the lists.

Those listings seem all good, makes sense

Are you thinking the same way?
