In my teens, I lived in a region where the affluent prioritized appearances over deeper values. This environment made me look for something more meaningful.
Growing up in these circles, I often felt out of place. But despite all this, the fanatic interest of my surroundings in the creative world of anime offered me a refreshing escape from the Western rot I had grown sick of. Anime was my first discovery of an entertainment element not driven by the consumerist Western infection. Albeit its numerous flaws, it shone brightly compared to Western works.
Memories of my peers drawing anime characters so passionately were what introduced me to anime. I got to see the first-ever stories that diverged from Western clichés and the consumerist rush, in anime. The plot and better-than-none philosophical elements in some series were a welcome contrast to the instant gratification culture I knew.
Anime opened doors to worlds that made some sense of human nature and morality; through these stories, I found joy in media content for the first time.
