Just a casual anime watcher. Nothing special. Nothing is perfect to me but if an anime is 10, it is an anime which is so moving that I needed to say it. Genres I like most are romance, comedy, psychological and tragedy? I especially like anime which touches on philosophy a bit. My ranking system is the standard sound, animation, story, characters and enjoyment. 5 is okay and anything higher than 5 is good. Anything lower than 5 is probably terrible. UNF means the ending has a scene which leads on to a non-existent season or does not feel complete and needs another season (to me). I mostly watch an anime series for its story or enjoyability. I hardly ever have trouble understanding a story (eg I understood serial experiments lain) so a confusing story will never bring points down for me. When a story is confusing in an anime for me, it is a sign for me that the anime is bad. Even though I prioritise story and (to a slightly lesser extent) characters, the animation will tell me whether to drop a series. Music seems to define, for me, which anime are good and which anime are great as this also boosts my enjoyment the most.
Things I like in anime are:
The concept of fakes. What I mean is when a person is living a life in one way but actually is another or when a person has a clone/shadow/alter ego ect. This does not mean a person their identity is a fake. It can but it doesn't necessarily. For example Iori Nagase (Kokoro Connect) with her fake personalities, Mio Nishizono (Little Busters) with her shadow, and Tsubasa Hanekawa (Bakemonogatari) living her life of lies.
The tragic nice girl. The girl who doesn't seem to deserve punishment but gets it anyway. Note the word 'nice'. It always reminds us that life is never fair. For example: Yuko Amamiya (Ef: A Tale of Melodies), Mayuri Shiina (Steins; Gate), and Nagisa Furukawa (Clannad).
The unrecognised hero. The admirable hero who does things without people realising gaining no recognition but can be found out a while later. This does not mean, like with the concept of fakes, disguised heroes who are acknowledged but real identity is unknown. For example: Homura Akemi (Madoka Magica) with her backstory, Shun Aonuma (Shin Sekai Yori) with his erased existence, and Keima Katsuragi (The World God Only Knows) being unremembered by the heroines.
Utilisation of time mechanics. Whether it be fortune telling, time travel, time manipulation or a countdown system, when it is done right, it feels amazing. For example: Homura Akemi (Madoka Magica) has both her abilities and the countdown to fighting walpurgis night, Steins;Gate time travelling, and Yuki Nagato's (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) funny fortune telling
Things I hate in anime are:
The perverted misunderstandings in action anime. In comedies and slice of life anime, I can somewhat live with it. For example: any interaction with Ichika Orimura (Infinite Stratos) and I mean any, Kazuto Kirigaya with some of the girls (Sword Art Online) it happens from time to time, and Ayumu Aikawa with Haruna (Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka?) it occurred enough times to piss me off.
Recap episodes/ movies. As in when they show pretty much the same scenes as a previous episode with nothing new. For example, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Movie 1, Air episode 13, and Sword Art Online Movie for the most part.
Idle slice of life anime. Slice of life anime where nothing is happening. They can rest but the time they do it for can't be too long. For example, K-On where they pretty much do nothing, Tamako Market where they pretty much do nothing, and Azumanga Daioh which had some really long scenes where nothing happened.
Why aren't the anime with 10 perfect:
Steins gate was fairly slow and the animation, while good, was not amazing.
Clannad Afterstory suffered the same fate as steins gate with its beginning being slow as well.
Aria the Origination is probably only a 9 anime but the sheer enjoyment and unwillingness to detract from the anime makes it a 10. Also, due to the additive episodic nature, it caused me to want more. Like A LOT MORE. I will miss this series ;-;
What the anime with 9.5 lacked:
5cm per second lacked consistancy. The first episode was great and was an easy 10 but the other two were not as good.
Aria The Natural was the type of anime which started out slow and boring and then somehow manages to, a few episodes in, turn all the hatred towards the anime into excellent points for the anime but it doesn't stop the fact that some of it was boring and slow
Aria The Avvenire is the future and as such, the story and plethora of characters therefore suffer. IF it were to be longer, it would most certainly be a 10 as the visual upgrades are breathtaking
Ef: A Tale of Memories/Melodies had each season highlight the flaws of the other whether it be the not as strong story in melodies or the not as likeable characters in memories. Also the music and animation were not as memorable as others. (was a 10 at one stage and it is this fact that it is 9.5 and not 9)
Fate/Zero and its second season suffered from a forgotten soundtrack and the fact that the ending was too fast as well as being already known as it was a prequel. (was a 10 at one stage)
Girls und Panzer der Film was probably the most enjoyable thing to watch but it lacked depth in each of its characters, with each being a basic stereotype of its nation. Also it had a pretty weak plot.
Little Busters Refrain felt a bit rushed at the end but was brilliant throughout with very little flaws.
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya had a few plotholes and is incomplete.
Kanon (2006) did not have a strong animation and its opening and ending theme were not that good to me.
Monogatari Series: Second Season had one arc which I kinda really hated due to a certain little girl. It wasn't Kaiki's fault.
Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan had high enjoyment with its hilarious cast while but not much else aside from that.
Shin Sekai Yori delivered its ending message too abruptly as well as its soundtrack not being that memorable.
Shokugeki no Souma made its judging scenes too long at times which subtracted from its flow.
Spice and Wolf Season 1 did not have that amazing of an animation and soundtrack. (season 2 did not get 9.5 as the ending makes me feel not right)
Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Zoku had some dragged out scenes that went a bit too long as well as the series not feeling complete.
Honourable Mentions List:
Keroro Gunsou and Digimon Adventure for being my first gateway anime.
Hayate no Gotoku and The World God Only Knows for being my second gateway anime after I stopped for a few years.
