I am an atypical watcher of anime, but I appreciate it for being very different from any other medium. I prefer humanist, eccentric and existential works. I am not a fanboy of most of what's offered in the anime landscape: action, harems, etc.
My favorite series is House of Five Leaves (Saraiya Goyou), for being a perfectly serene and humanistic, albeit romanticized, version of samurai in Japan. The show is so convincing in its presentation of its characters, that conventional plot becomes immaterial. I like shows/movies like this: ones whose sense of world-building transcends a need for action, or another traditional device, to keep the audience engaged. Cowboy Bebop is another notable exemplar of this notion. I realize that shows/movies like this are few-and-far-between, and for this reason I keep my head up, when possible.
With sake bottle in hand, SamuraiSteve trudges on, in order to find new and great anime...
