How I rate anime and manga on MAL
My ratings are, for the most part, based on how much I enjoyed a particular anime/manga and do not necessarily reflect the general level of animation/sound/acting quality. Things like originality, good storytelling and emotional impact are what I tend to value the most. That being said, if the execution is lacking in some noticeable way it will most likely affect my rating. Also, I recently began giving somwhat lower scores, so my past ratings might in some cases be too high.
10: A masterpiece. (Or, most of the time, a series I'm very biased towards.)
9: Some of the best anime/manga I've watched/read that for some reason did not make a 10.
8: Very good.
7: Good.
6: Fine/adequate. Might at least have some sense of originality.
5: Average. Nothing new.
4: Lacking/lackluster.
3: Pretty bad.
2: So bad that it's good. (Might be a hidden comedy goldmine!)
1: Horrible, with no comedic value. Unwatchable. Except that I watched it. Even though it took a long time. And I might have initially dropped it. It's actually kind of impressive, when I think about it.
+/- 1 for personal bias.

I also don't bother with updating my list, because I rarely watch any anime show these days. Only those that pique my attention such as Shin Mazinger, Kaiji, Claymore, Cowboy Bebop, Hajime no Ippo, and Death Note. I usually skip moe shows.
Well, do you trust the japanese public, because the ratings are kinda good for a show that airs 11:30 at night. At one point, it was even behind Naruto and Bleach although this show ain't mainstream at all. I've also seen a lot of blogs that praise it, and honestly, I think I rather trust individual opinions than the mass without any some sort of concrete opinion on it. I also usually visit mecha boards, and I've heard tons of good things about it. Actually, I initially got into Shin Mazinger via a real-life friend.
Didn't I say only the first episodes are pretty much mindless? The later ones focus on plot, and I thought you like plot.
Don't speak of lameness of characters when you don't know them yet.
I'm only suggesting you keep going because Shin Mazinger definitely is a plot-driven mazinger series and if you don't know who Tsubasa is, she'll the most badass woman you'll ever meet in anime.
