Hmm.. Those several additional pages for chapter 139 (Attack on Titan) actually made it better for me. They didn't of course fix it (after all there are still those weird panels with Eren, Armin and Reiner), but made the epilogue more consistent and better looking than it was before. What are your thoughts about them?
I, on the other hand, was really positively surprised by seeing Rico Brzenska appearing there. Seeing her was something really unexpected, especially when actually more important character like Yelena did not appear. While the absence of Yelena in that chapter was one of its cons, it was cool to see somebody looking like Rico, because some time before the last chapter was released, I've been guessing whether she would appear once again in Shingeki no Kyojin, and if not then what had happened to her.
I am skeptical a bit, though. Everything is great, but only if the woman from that certain panel is indeed Rico. It hasn't been confirmed nor denied as I know, hehe.
Yeah, AnR ending was Eren-centered idea of wrapping everything up, with leaving everyone else behind and ending their story arcs suddenly. However I think it would've been the best ending for the series, even though I would not have liked it because of the idea of Eren winning.
While I was satisfied with the ending with Alliance winning etc., I disliked this theme you are talking about as well. It made Eren look like a hero, or saviour, and the Rumbling as something humble and just, while Eren basically slaughtered 80% of human population (including Eldians living outside Paradis that didn't go with Annie's father). Glorification of that kind of things not only did not feel right, but also was quite random, same as portraying Armin as somebody who "saved the world". It was foreshadowed many chapters before, but was it really necessary to make Armin reconcile Eldians and Marleyans residing in Fort Salt like that? ;p
Reiner was kinda butchered as a character. Okay, he didn't become the second Helos, but making him look that weird and definitely not funny was like adding another victim to what Eren had started, lol.
About anime original ending, we will see. There is always a chance that it might be better than the source material's ending, although there is always a chance that it might be worse. The safest way to adapt this ending would be just adapting the actual ending.
Yeah, I was also surprised and quite disappointed that Yelena did not appear in this chapter. But hey, I still have hope that we might see her since it has been announced that the final Volume is going to have several additional pages. Perhaps Yelena will appear on one of them? :)
As for the chapter, I had mixed feelings. Before the last chapter was released, I checked out once again most of the most popular fantheories about the ending. While chapter 139 was not "the best ending possible", which would have been Akatsuki no Requiem ending for me, it was not as bad as "the worst endings possible", which were in my opinion those AU and time-loop endings.
Like you said, everything felt to be rushed in a weird way, leaving many questions unanswered or just making some themes irrelevant, while they were presented before as at least important ones. Almost all comedy panels felt to be more pathetic than actual funny, especially if I thought what could've been added in their place to solve some questions, even one or two of them. Not to forget that one weird panel with Carla Yaeger, lol.
This chapter failed to wrap such a great story in a satisfactionary way. It was not really that bad, but at most it was a mediocre finale of this manga.
While I personally didn't want Eren to win and I was a fan of Alliance ending, I think that AnR ending would be the best ending for this manga from the technical point of view, since it has everything that made Shingeki no Kyojin so good and so special.
I hope the anime will fix some mistakes that had appeared in the manga. It would be cool if it had an ending exclusive to the anime, or both this ending and the one faithful to the source material. The latter option most likely won't happen but the former? Who knows? :-)
