DISCLAIMER: My anime list here is currently incomplete. It will be done eventually, but I'm on vacation right now and it is painfully tedious to update my information using my phone.
If you're really interested, I've been keeping track of everything on my AnimePlanet account (Rippleshadow).
There are 3 main reasons I like anime:
1- The sound
I love hearing Japanese, it sounds beautiful and poetic. This is why subs are always better to me than dubs. I like the fundamental sound of Japanese more than the fundamental sound of English.
Furthermore, anime is a good way to find Japanese music, which is what introduced me to anime in the first place.
The overall sound of an anime is important to me.
2- The visuals
I love seeing pretty art, and I think anime can be very good at capturing a beautiful art style. The "quality of animation" is not so important to me as long as it looks pretty. I generally avoid watching anime that don't look good to me, no matter how good people say the show is. This is probably one reason KyoAni and P.A. Works are my favorite animation studios.
The overall appearance of an anime is very important to me.
3- The characters
While most people think premise, plot, and execution are what determines how much they enjoy an anime, the characters are what makes a good or bad show for me. I absolutely love learning about characters' stories, personalities, philosophies, and relationships. Some people get bored by the same archetype being used over and over again, but each character is different to me because they all go through different things and are surrounded by different people. I judge an anime based off of how emotionally connected they made me feel to the characters, how the characters change, and what I learned from the characters.
Overall, the characters are the dealbreaker in anime and are the most important thing to me.
So. I rate anime based purely on enjoyment. You could equate each number on the rating scale to a percentage:
10 = 100% enjoyable
9 = 90% enjoyable
8 = 80% enjoyable
And so on. There's no such thing as a perfect anime, but there are anime I can perfectly enjoy. I'm not picky and tend to finish only the shows I enjoy, whic is why most of the scores I give are from 7 to 10. The rest of my shows go onto my on-hold list (aka postponed indefinitely).
