Understanding ReynTime's Rating System and How it Works For You
Warning: All scores are randomly reevaluated and are always a work in progress. My ratings are for your personal knowledge/benefit, but they are based on my experiences with the anime. Should you deem something controversial, I'm more than happy to discuss my logic behind the score in detail. If you like my taste, feel free to ask for recommendations or if you think I would like something please let me know!
When I watch an anime, there are a multitude of factors that go into a score. The most weighted factor that goes into my scores is whether or not it was enjoyable. Other factors that go into consideration are plot, character development, animation quality, art direction, its impact on me and the community, soundtrack, innovation, and so forth. I would like my ratings to be a guide for those deciding whether that particular anime is worth watching. I rarely review anime so if there are any inquires on an in depth opinion on an anime just PM me or leave me a comment on my profile and I'll gladly take some time to give you my final impressions of a particular series. Please keep in mind that my ratings are ultimately just one opinion. Listed below is a general idea of how I felt while watching a particular series.
Abomination A disgrace to all forms of entertainment. It's going to be near impossible for anyone to disagree with me that this show is an abomination to have existence. I lost precious time that I cannot take back. There is ZERO VALUE to watching this. Even if you want to watch garbage, you will not find value, There's ZERO FUN to be had, it's a downright. travesty and should be avoided AT ALL COSTS! If you're a masochist, then by all means give it a try, but any self respecting viewer should stay clear from this. The show shouldn't exist and will take more than just the time you spent on it watching.
Degeneracy I felt appalled and upset that I wasted my time on the series. There were no redeeming qualities. The show was so bad, it was outright offensive. If you have any self-respect for yourself, avoid any shows rated a 2 or lower by me as I believe when I mark something at this threshold it is an objective opinion. Any show rated 2 is for the masochist or someone who intentionally wants to be pissed off. All anime rated a 2 were watched because they were known to be terrible and I secretly wanted to experience how bad anime could get. Trust me, there are anime out there that are a disgrace to the art-form and entertainment in general. The only highlight for a 2 is that there's something else worse out there. There is no entertainment to be had with these shows. The show is undeniably bad. You want a train wreck? Look no further! A dropped 2 which is extremely rare means it was too long for me to finish, but my hatred for it gave me a very strong opinion.
Appalling It took more than significant willpower for me to watch it much less finish it if I did. A 3 means that I personally could not stand the series and would write essays on how much I hated the experience, but there's a actually a good chance that if you have low compatibility with me that this series is worth a shot for you. If I had the choice, I would go back in time and not watch the series. A show rated with a 3 is a show that has little to no redeeming qualities and will bring out rage or confusion. Essentially, watching these shows will be detrimental to your well being. Personally anything at a three or less is worse than fan fiction.....
Very Disappointing It's a multitask anime. The anime suffers from mediocrity, being poorly executed and is a bad anime in general with almost no redeeming qualities. If you're looking for "bad" look no further. Anything rated a 4 or less is something that has made me face palm and wonder why the show exists.
Bad, but Tolerable The show has something going for it, but I had a difficult time keeping myself engaged and interested. There's a chance that I found some sort of enjoyment from the series and maybe a few redeeming qualities about the show, but I found myself more disappointed than satisfied.
Okay Good enough to give it a try. It has its niche. Some anime that have received a six started off very strong and I adored the series until it reached an important plot development and went straight to the garbage. Other shows made me feel "been there done that". A six is a solid score that lets you know that ReynTime enjoyed it to an extent, but something was missing.
Decent The anime is "good", but the series has some notable faults (lots of tropes/ lack of polish/bad pacing, etc) that detract from the experience to firmly recommend. I may enjoy this show a lot, but I understand that the show isn't revolutionary and it's simply a guilty pleasure.
Great I recommend this anime. I thoroughly enjoyed the series. Definitely take a look into it. The show does many things right.
Amazing I highly recommend this anime. Anything 9 or above is something I consider to be an amazing anime. It played with my heartstrings. It was memorable. I'm a huge fan of the show, but the passion is not as strong as the shows I've rated a 10.
Genre Defining/ Masterful The show has earned my highest recommendation. It may not be perfect, but I forgave its shortcomings due to its outstanding strengths. The satisfaction and fulfillment I've gained from watching that anime has lasted months, years, and perhaps forever. The show gave me utter delight and happiness. Whenever someone brings it up, I instantly gush about how much I enjoyed it. In fact, any anime given this award deserves all the prestige and praise it gets. This anime will inspire you and help you enjoy enjoy your life more so than prior to watching it. Essentially, I am a fanboy of these shows and I believe that these anime will be celebrated for its outstanding achievement in entertainment. There are currently 3 anime series that have achieved this accomplishment.
Still have it installed on Desktop, but don't use it. I mainly use WhatsApp and Messenger, and once in a great while Skype. Lmk if you wanna talk! And yes, MAL has changed a lot since. Guess you could say I still haven't forgiven them for removing the "thumbs down" feature. But yeah, times have moved forward and I have since left all my clubs and kept chatter to just friends and those starting conversation with me.
Yup. Missouri is on a roll now. Just need the STL to step it up on the baseball side, seeing that the Royals aren't competitive right now. But man, your state knows how to celebrate! Nonetheless, that's good that you're back in the fold with anime again. I'm not sure I can get burnt out myself considering how little I watch per week and how brilliantly I can get sidetracked. More often than not it'll take me months (if not years) to complete a non-ongoing series! haha
I forgot to ask awhile back, but did you celebrate the Blues run? Shame the Cardinals' run this year ended the way it did, but I'm sure they did the city and the fans proud. Getting back to the Cardinal way with the pitching and defense, so hopefully they can work out the kinks on offense next year. Anyway, anything new with you?
That sounds like an adventure! Would be fun to do a convention in another state, but unfortunately that's not feasible for a Hawaii resident, let alone a back-to-back as a champ like yourself is considering. Better let those Chicago people know where you're from too with either the Cardinals or Blues apparel/gear, though I'd go with the Blues to be more on the safe-side (with the Blackhawks having been swept out of the playoffs).
I mainly like 90s and 00s GT1 racers, modern-day GT3 and GTLM racers, and six- or twelve-cylinder musical beasts like the R34 Skyline, Porsche 911, Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SV, or Pagani Zonda 760RS. There are a few exceptions though with the ten-cylinder Viper and eight-cylinder Corvette (no American bias intended). My blog entry should summarize things pretty well. If we're going with brands, my favorites are probably Porsche and Aston Martin. As for family cars, I love the simplicity and ease of my 01 Corolla, so early 00s Corollas over everything in my book (including Accords)! haha
It's about time I make a move to take advantage of that though, having been there for just about a year. The mention of nonexistent Japanese presence might scratch my rose-tinted glasses I see STL through a little, but nothing to sway my opinions. I was looking at round-trip rates to STL for fun, but SotY doesn't have a tour lined up for this year so I'll be considering next year. I've been on this island for far too long without having gone out (since 2008-09). But yeah, the solid foundation of class and politeness I see with the Japanese in general has my eye on the women especially. And the children are just as adorable as anime make them out to be, if not more so!
If you asked me that in the early 2010s or before I would've said Until the Day I Die, which at one point was my favorite song ever. But now, I'd probably give that nod to Anthem of Our Dying Day. Heck, I might even go out on a limb and say The Black Swan is my favorite of their albums, but don't hold me to that statement! They're my favorite because they're the only band in which I really like a song from EACH of their studio albums. Even Linkin Park and Avenged Sevenfold don't carry that distinction in my book. But anyway, Page Avenue should still be the album I remember SotY by. I really hope this new album from them continues on their great track record with me personally. Really feel I'd be doing myself a major injustice if I don't make an effort to go out and see them live, as I doubt they will be coming here.
I'll have to check on Incubus. Damn, Wish You Were Here was one of the first 00s rock songs I heard and one of the songs responsible for getting me into the genre along with stuff like Alien Ant Farm's "Smooth Criminal" cover, "In the End" by LP, and "Crawling in the Dark" by Hoobastank.
Assetto Corsa is the main one I play, although I do have DiRT Rally and my PSVR sitting around as well. Simply put, Assetto Corsa is undoubtedly the most important game to ever come out in my book. I'm on PS4, so nothing Steam for me unfortunately. Well, unless I decide to really throw myself into Hell and diving into the PC realm, which really breaks the sim-racing game open with mods for AC and the subscription-based iRacing.
No idea. I really can't look that far ahead yet, as it's been years since I've been in any form of college and still can't figure out myself or my academics. If anything, I trust in both my hobbies and in skills I'll want regardless of career choice, which are the ability to go fast in a car/motorcycle and speak Japanese. The Japanese thing doesn't really stem from my anime interests, but rather my automotive interests. Might even be notable that I can only see myself marrying a Japanese woman if it ever went that far. Japan looks like a must-visit for someone like me if not the Nurburgring/Autobahn in Germany or US states that have racetracks like Florida or Texas. Oh, and Saaaaint Louisssss! I really should go and see Story of the Year perform once over there and maybe catch a Cardinals game too.
As for my job, it's definitely to pass time and stay alive, but not really live. Could be a good opportunity to mess around with my Japanese employers, co-workers, and the various Japanese tourists that come by too. But hey, that sounds like a bold move to make regarding the Olympics! Hope it happens for you, man. Same goes for the whole soul-searching business. Life's tough!
It's early in the season, but damn did people scorch the basepaths against them! I'll be more tuned in once the NHL and NBA seasons end altogether. As for the Blues, the schedule is on the NHL site and their first game is on Wed @ 9:30 ET against the Minnesota Wild. I really would like for PIT and STL to meet in the Stanley Cup Finals sometime! Even though PIT is my main team, I really want to see STL win once at least...
Definitely not girly (who in the heck said that???), but I can say that it requires a more adult mindset and/or acquired taste for slower, more mature anime. The narrative is quite endearing and really brings the traditional art of rakugo to life. It really was made to tell a unique story and not made just to make money or show off on visual prowess or something like that.
I slowed down tremendously with anime as well, mainly because I got into sim-racing on my end. Doesn't help that sports playoffs are right around the corner either. Anyway, nothing really happening with me other than the usual work and play. No school for me yet, so I'll have to fill in time accordingly until then which will likely be next year. Probably just going to aim for a motorcycle and think about learning Japanese in the meantime since I'm a hopeless single person with no idea what to do career-wise.
Not much you can do when you have school AND work going on simultaneously. Damn, tell me about that! At least it seems like you consistently have something to occupy your time and put money/knowledge in your pocket.
The Blues managed to find a groove as of late and have a pretty good record I believe from March onward. Or at least it started turning for the better when they ditched Hitchcock as a distraction and thrust his successor into the main role. Allen, I think, has also come on late and has a few shutouts and good games going for him. There are times though that I wish they could've kept Elliott around for one more season, considering the success he's had with the Calgary Flames. Tarasenko is a sniper as usual! As for the Cardinals, I really don't know much about them because of being sidetracked by the other sports. I'd say you guys should just stick with what you have already, as I can't see what football/soccer does for your city. Unlike the other pro sports, the football stuff doesn't really feature the best talent out there compared to the European leagues.
Last anime season had 3-Gatsu no Lion and the Rakugo sequel airing throughout, so you could get caught up on those if you have time. Both are, simply put, a blessing to the anime medium.
yeah, Rei is a great character, don't get me wrong, i like her, but to think that i would think of someone besides Asuka being best girl, it's unfathomable :o
Yuki was interesting, but she was just a bit too perfect, sure the film brought forth some of her imperfections, but overall, she can do everything.. which is cool, but it just makes her lack the depth that Rei has
Tsunderes nowadays are just characters that are meant to be tsunderes and not their own interesting personas (ie, tsundere for the sake of tsundere).. it's awful and lazy characterization and writing
the harem aspects of UBW were too prominent for me and much of a turn-off... sure Shirou's characterization was great, like i seriously hated him most of the series, but turned it around towards the end to think of him as a decent character. Toosaka on the other hand was primarily like one of the modern tsunderes that i mentioned not liking.. she has her cool moments, but her "dere" moments were just too ridiculous and ruined her as a character. and then since it's from a VN, there's is a whole lot of content left out and the anime just kinda like references things to not talk about them at all later.. meh, not a fan i guess.
we won't know if i'll like Utena until i watch it, so i'll try to give it a shot soon, but thanks for the recommendations
ugh, haven't been that into episodic series lately.. they're not that interesting to marathon. i've even been watching Nichijou little by little for like a year now and have only watched 10 episodes.. Maison Ikkoku was semi-episodic, but there was always character or relationship progression/recession in every episode, if it's like that i'll give it a try sooner rather than later.. I'd rather watch its anime if they're both good anyway, watching is easier and more interesting than reading in some cases (unless the manga is better like half the time, or 75% of the time)..
i want to read something like adventurous or highly progressional.. like i wanted to read Hunter X Hunter, but I kinda just rewatched most of it (2011), so reading it won't be that fun with it so fresh in my mind, and then i wanted to read Bakuman., but just haven't gotten in the mood.. and then i kinda started reading Shokugeki no Soma awhile ago because the anime finished airing (for now), but it's gonna take forever to get up to the part where the anime ended, and i don't want to skip through it to that part.. idk.. it's mostly just me being picky, or rather, in the mood for something specific, but i don't know what it is :c
to be honest, the first time i watched Evangelion, i was a Rei-fag :c
i am ashamed
thanks, you have an interesting list too. i have Utena in my queue on Crunchyroll, i just haven't watched it yet..
it's kinda hard for me to get into new series nowadays, i guess i'm very skeptical of most series now since the hype is almost never well deserved. Madoka was okay, wouldn't say it was bad, but not that great.. i liked the art though. the Fate series is overrated. the only decent one was Fate/Zero, but great art as well.. i'll definitely pick up Utena someday, but recently i've been more in the mood to read some manga, so need something to read first..
how is Urusei Yatsura btw? i see you're also a fan of Maison Ikkoku, which i thought was super great with many memorable and interesting characters, and i kinda wanted to pick up Urusei Yatsura, but the characters seemed a little similar to Maison Ikkoku.. and being that it's the same author, i wondered if that's the case.. i love long series, so i thought maybe that'll be perfect for me, but what do you think?
I think Iron Blooded Orphans hold really well against the other older Gundams. And yes, I'm about to graduate next year and I'm pretty excited for it.
Did you watch Euphonium's episode 5? That episode has got to be the best episode I've seen this year. KyoAni really blew my expectations for that episode. Their performance is really full of emotion and it's kind of suspenseful because for a second there I thought they weren't going to make it. But their reaction when they get gold and move on to the Nationals, it's really rewarding. KyoAni outdid themselves with the animation as well, I heard that fingers were synchronized with music and those were actually correct. That full performance really gave me the chills.
It's been a long time. I'm pretty much back in the anime business. I'm watching 4 shows this season which are Euphonium 2, Gundam, Yuri on Ice, and Izetta. All of them are pretty good, so check some of them if you haven't especially Yuri on Ice.
Euphonium's start of a new season exceeded my expectations. It set the atmosphere, we got KumiRei moments, and new characters with new drama. Really looking forward to this one. The interactions between character really feel natural.
It's certainly a rivalry for sure, and they do have the right to talk smack, having got the better of the Cardinals more recently. Thing is, they better deliver on that World Series victory because they don't want to be adding more years to their drought. Got a lot of catching up to do also to get on STL level in terms of history and accolades. Can't imagine what it was like being a Boston Red Sox fan before they won in 2004 (last championship prior to that was back in 1918). As for the Cards this season, I'm not sure what to think. The pitching just hasn't been there and they don't seem to have much to work with in terms of speed on the base paths. Injuries are pretty untimely too. Those guys sure can hit the ball hard though and come back late in close games!
Oh, yeah. If you get into a groove with both school and work like that everything flies at light speed. I've been looking forward to 2017 since around May myself, so hopefully things can keeping flying for me too except in October with the MLB playoffs and some other fun things I was planning. Darn. When people guess my age they usually are well below the number. Not saying that to brag or anything, but it can be a disadvantage too when I have to buy movie tickets for an R-rated movie, or in the extremely rare instance I have to buy alcohol for a friend. Probably also means that older men and women take me less seriously, though I'm actually not that mature to begin with. And don't be worried about sounding like a woman because I have my feminine tastes and preferences too. If I ever did go to the mall for a shopping spree, I'd probably get stuck there for hours and hours deliberating over options. Just found that out today when I went to a local shop to pick out a few pairs of walking shorts.
Darn. Just as sad as our island then! Nah, but drag racing is okay. To me though, its more so about either reaction time or the machines being driven. I heard somewhere that the battles are really won in the garage. Street racing is rather nuts if you're talking more than just straight line highway or freeway pulls. It's actually why Wangan Midnight is one of my favorite anime of all time because of how based on actual events and even people the show is. Japanese street racers then (back in the 80s and 90s) must've been having the time of their lives! Personally, I like racing cars or versions better because the car has more mechanical personality and precision with less weight and sound deadening. You can really hear the engines scream and the cars shift and accelerate!
Nice. I do wonder too what other languages actually sound like when you understand them in full. I'm actually afraid that the pace and dialogue of anime might not be all I've cracked it up to be in my favorites. Stuff like Aikatsu I know have juiced up subs with big, concise words. Nonetheless, the Japanese language is better geared for these things imo, as the language sounds rather elegant.
It's okay. You were bound to run into Guilty Crown at some point in time. I mean, look at all the hentai I thought was good back in the day. Dropped them all down to 1s and now I have like 130 or more rated as such. Same goes for Bungaku Shoujo and Denpa-teki na Kanojo, two shows I once had rated 6 or better. But it's all a part of the process. Didn't get these low mean scores and high drop counts overnight! haha
I'd recommend you stuff, but have no idea where to start or what you want.
Then again, I watched it back in June 2012 (have my entries start and end dated where applicable). The show was quite the punch to the jaw back then, but now its more like a flick to the head. And that goes for the original TV series too. It just doesn't hold its appeal and luster the way LL has over the years. Yeah, some kinds of moe will drive me away if overdone, like in New Game. The fact that Veronin sent me a gif of the main girl getting undressed in a bathroom stall was good enough to affirm I made the right decision in dropping it. The only show that ever did bathroom stalls right was Ping Pong. But anyway, the right kind of moe for me is Kono Bijutsubu (from this season) and Non Non Biyori. It really works to compliment the type of anime and the mood/story.
If you're talking about the original Aikatsu, then that one took me awhile to adjust to the repetition and quirkiness of the 3DCG performances. Trust me though in that those improve drastically over the course of the series (and into the Stars sequel/spinoff). I don't fit the demographic either, but I see the series as something free of unnecessary fanservice and a product with true passion behind it. I love the optimism and themes like with what Aria brought for me, and the progression of the girls is just surreal, from main to supporting and student to adult. You really do come along for the ride as the people grow and age together, partaking in all sorts of random "idol" activities like running crazy relays and obstacle courses, chopping trees, scaling cliffs, starring in epic movies and side TV-show roles, outrunning lions, and I have no idea what else. It just goes on and on, eating good food and singing good songs and... all right I'll leave it at that. Longest comment in a long time, so have fun and show me those graduate school skills with your response! haha
Right on point. I think that's what actually weakens me a bit in that I don't have much ammo to starting conversations. Sports are one thing, but not everyone watches the same stuff with the same mindset if they do watch sports to begin with. I can't make relative comparisons or illustrate points because of not being tuned into live-action movies, TV shows, pop culture, and even current events/news. But hey, that's a disadvantage I'm willing to live with and possibly build upon. And you're probably better off downloading MLB At Bat and the NHL app if you want to keep track of the two STL teams. I'm actually not all that big on the SB, as American football is my least favorite of the four major pro sports here. It's still a great game though, but I'm not sure it's as pure as baseball or hockey in terms of fair competition. Crazy how small hockey contracts are in comparison to the other sports especially!
I'll keep on the lookout. But yeah, papers and presentations are pretty tough on me, though I do see them as necessary for success since you need to have facts backing you up and an ability to articulate those facts to others. That certainly applies outside of one's career too.
It costs to be a boss, but I like the notion of it costing less in STL! Nah, but damn. Has to be a true STL resident to knock on my fantasies like that. I don't need eye candy actually. Just need people who love their life, love their teams, and rep their city! The business thing is pretty intriguing too. Oh, and if you guys have even one racetrack out there you have this island I live on beat. All in all, it does stir me to think about how I'd fare in STL compared to over here. I might just be taking all the little things here in Hawaii too much for granted.
Natsume, for me, has a nice poetic touch with how Takashi is on a mission to return those names to all the youkai. It's got great character progression too, as I love learning more about Natsume, his friends, and the youkai with each passing episode. It's got a great feel for human interaction and feelings if you ask me. In regards to the remainder of Fall 2016, I really don't know what else is coming out and will just wait until October comes around to see what's up. Hype no longer is a variable in my seasonal equation. Any show can get wrecked on any given day.
Delta has such a lame story and lame driving motives for the characters. I got lucky then that I was disciplined to drop Re:Zero early on. It basically boils down to whether I see anything synonymous with shounen anime in character design, behaviors, dialogue, and whatnot. It showed up in just the premiere of R:Z, and that was enough for me to show it out the door... haha
I used to be an iM@S guy, but the series dropped off badly after the original TV series. Cinderella Girls was pretty much the nail in the coffin. The one movie sequel to the original series seemed to lack heart/passion also. With Love Live, it may be as cliche and cookie-cutter as they come with characters and story, but Sunrise does a damn good job at bringing it all to life. Character designs are impeccable and I feel like the production team is having fun producing this work. I kid you not that I consistently find myself smiling or laughing along while watching LL episodes. But hey, I didn't even bring Aikatsu and Aikatsu Stars into the equation yet. That one is the most pure of all three, being immune to fanservice and whatnot.

I'd rather watch its anime if they're both good anyway, watching is easier and more interesting than reading in some cases (unless the manga is better like half the time, or 75% of the time)..
i want to read something like adventurous or highly progressional.. like i wanted to read Hunter X Hunter, but I kinda just rewatched most of it (2011), so reading it won't be that fun with it so fresh in my mind, and then i wanted to read Bakuman., but just haven't gotten in the mood.. and then i kinda started reading Shokugeki no Soma awhile ago because the anime finished airing (for now), but it's gonna take forever to get up to the part where the anime ended, and i don't want to skip through it to that part.. idk.. it's mostly just me being picky, or rather, in the mood for something specific, but i don't know what it is :c
i am ashamed
thanks, you have an interesting list too. i have Utena in my queue on Crunchyroll, i just haven't watched it yet..
it's kinda hard for me to get into new series nowadays, i guess i'm very skeptical of most series now since the hype is almost never well deserved.
Did you watch Euphonium's episode 5? That episode has got to be the best episode I've seen this year. KyoAni really blew my expectations for that episode. Their performance is really full of emotion and it's kind of suspenseful because for a second there I thought they weren't going to make it. But their reaction when they get gold and move on to the Nationals, it's really rewarding. KyoAni outdid themselves with the animation as well, I heard that fingers were synchronized with music and those were actually correct. That full performance really gave me the chills.
Euphonium's start of a new season exceeded my expectations. It set the atmosphere, we got KumiRei moments, and new characters with new drama. Really looking forward to this one. The interactions between character really feel natural.
Longest comment in a long time, so have fun and show me those graduate school skills with your response! haha
