So, about the hidden gems, do you want me to give you a list of obscure anime to check out, or are you good with a show or two?

lol hope you aren't offended by the Utena review; it's just not my cup of tea, but I respect it for what it wanted to achieve. I find that's really common with a lot of people on this site; half their anime I'll have nearly the exact same ratings, but for the other half my ratings are entirely different. I'm stoked for Hoozuki season 2 as well. When it first came out, no one I knew watched it so I didn't think it was popular enough to get a season 2. I'm so happy it did though :D

According to what you haven't seen:

- Fate/Zero: The only warning I'll give is this show is a prequel to the Fate/Stay series. Most people would recommend watching Unlimited Blade Works first and then this. I disagree as this is the much, much better anime and you're not spoiling much for yourself regardless.

- Gungrave: This is a personal favorite of mine, mainly because I played the videogame as a kid and loved it. The anime is still a great tale of friendship and how people can wander on different paths regardless of how strong bonds can be.

- Ef (memories/melodies): Great drama-romance triangle. Probably my favorite romance next to Kimi ni Todoke. Uses its art style to drive the narrative.

My 10-rating anime don’t make much sense because some of them are biased; either I have an OTP in there I ship or the anime suits my personal preferences (I acknowledge this bias in my reviews though). The only anime I’ve watched that truly and objectively deserves 10/10 are Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (both seasons) and Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (entire series). For me, a 10/10 anime has to have phenomenal plot and characters; plot is of utmost importance. I usually prefer multilayered plots (ex. Rakugo Shinjuu is about art and it’s MC’s life) or complex plots (ex. MSMM’s alternate timelines), both with a tragic twist. For characters, usually I don’t particularly like them initially, they grow on me as I learn more about their stories and motivations. A 10/10 anime fundamentally needs to make me feel something – be it fervor (for my OTPs) or sadness (for the MCs or myself). An anime masterpiece has to resonate with me, that’s why the innocent fluffy stuff doesn’t even register with me. The other anime I rated a 10 resonated with me, but they don’t have that complex/multilayered plot so they aren’t true 10s imo; maybe a 9.5 or something instead.

Btw, favourite character = Hoozuki, highly rated anime = Hoozuki no Reitetsu, Hotarubi no Mori e, Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu. You have good taste bro :)

Ah yes, the ole' "friends hyped me up." I'm guilty of that, too. Nowadays I try not to have any idea of a show except for the synopsis so I don't feel any bias.

I found all the characters enjoyable to watch and the action/gore/violence is all fire. If you look at it just judging on those criteria (as I did), the score should follow suit. It's been a bit since I watched it so maybe my opinion would change now.
