I grew up in the Anime room of my local video store (Scarecrow Video- the world’s largest). I work in coffee shop and shoe repair, and love poetry, film, literature, vhs-era trash media, rollerblading, and whiskey.
Mostly my scores come down to how much I subjectively enjoyed a series, but I do have some personal guidelines:
A show will accrue stars depending on how successful it is in the following catergories
X out of 3 stars for Characters- their complexity, interest, and relationships
X out of 3 stars for story- plot, originality, execution
X out of 3 stars for formal features- animation, soundtrack, voice-acting, and style
These three categories reflect my opinion and also overall enjoyment of the show on these counts.
X out of 1 star for Social Consciousness/ Emotional Intelligence
The last star is a special yes or no proposition, because I love to see anime that that display intelligence and depth when dealing with their character's emotions, transcend mysoginist topes and smart writing that doesn’t need cliches or gross scenarios that are so common in anime. The awarding of this star will include consideration of the diversity of characters, treatment of women, queer, and trans* characters, etc.
Favorite Anime Movies:
Spring and Chaos (1996)
Porco Rosso (1992)
Spirited Away (2001)
Galaxy Express 999 (1979)
