Man, I want to experience that feeling again. That feeling I had while reading Oyasumi Punpun, Onanie Master Kurosawa, and Aku no Hana. I want to relive the feeling I had during the pandemic while reading them.
Those kinds of stories have such a deep, intense impact—there’s something about them that really gets under your skin. It’s the rawness, the complexity of emotions, and that feeling of being lost or consumed by the narrative. Oyasumi Punpun, Onanie Master Kurosawa, and Aku no Hana all deal with dark, unflinching introspection and deep psychological turmoil, which is something you don’t see too often in mainstream media.
The pandemic gave a lot of people time to connect with those heavier, more thought-provoking pieces. The isolation of it all probably made those works hit even harder, bringing up feelings of confusion, loneliness, or struggle that resonated deeply. It’s almost like these manga were an outlet for that time, offering both a mirror to the chaos of life and a way to explore those complex emotions.

I started using MAL around 2010 or 2011, but I don’t remember the exact year, and I never registered for an account back then.

I have a bunch of burnouts from reading BOTI. The arc I'm on has the same setting and it's so long. So yesterday, I too, put on a nice little hour film called Angel's Egg. It's one of those kinds of nonsensical media, I liked it a lot. I don't have to analyze anything because the movie is up for interpretation, the director couldn't even tell you what it meant lol. I like things like that.
I've had someone describe Maruo's work as "misery porn." Can't say I disagree lol, But I enjoy his surreal aspects of storytelling and his cool artwork.
The Dancing Dwarf was an adaptation of a Japanese story, it was a bit underwhelming compared to DDT.
DDT had its fair share of humor among its abundance of f'ed up stuff, so it was readable lol. I liked the opening surreal illustrations. Two of them are on display in my profile bio under "Show Manga Illustrations."
I really commend his efforts in drawing so many worms. XD
I'm well myself, have you made some time for manga?
I'm more than halfway done reading Blade of the Immortal. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Also looking into Maruo Suehiro's work a bit in between. I've finished a short story collection, as well as a one chap by him. [DDT] [The Dancing Dwarf]
I finished all four omnibuses that I own, but not quite the whole series. I will be reading the rest online. :P
I buy all of my manga second-hand because it's cheaper. A great site for this is Mercari. People also sell a bunch of new stuff too at a good discount. I can refer you to a few listings of BOTI I found, if you're interested. This one, and This one for the complete series.
However you should take note of a little Samurai manga Im actually currently reading, Blade of the Immortal, and the art is just phenomenal! A lot of the panels are done in pencil only so it makes for a really cool sort-of “realism” effect. Its also worth mentioning a lot of people say it rivals one of the greatest samurai manga of all time “Lone wolf and cub”, I own four of the BOTI omnibuses so Im steadily working my way through them. Also, I’ve heard good things about Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite!
Hope you have a good day
