I tend to watch anime based on my needs at the time. If i'm feelign down or lonely, I tend to watch romantic/light hearted anime. SOmetimes I need a rip roaring adventure like fairy tail or one of the 'MMO or Medieval" animes. Sometimes I'm up for a little darkness and gore. Sometimes I need a little of everything because I don't know what I want tat the time.
For the most part, because of life events that have happened over the last 10 years, i am, for lack of a better term, emotionally dead, atleast introspectively.
I can't cry, feel, care for myself, though I'm by NO means depressed! I'm 100% in perfect neutrality, I don't feel happy or sad. However anime's (atleast if they're good) for me allow me to feel what I can't normally feel, because I feel it for the characters. I cried to Clannad: Afterstory, I feel in touch with characters from romance anime (though with far less luck!) I love the adventures and excitement of stories like FMA, and other anime like it. WHen I want an over the top battle I have DBZ to fall back on.
That may seem sad but it's not! this is how my life is and it's acceptable to me, I could certainly be in a worse position! But anime is the mold that fills the hole for me.

My rating system is essentially this:
10 - The anime either was WHOLLY a masterpiece from start to finish, or it had atleast one, if not several scenes that were just TOO perfect for me to not. The best example I can give of this would be The world god only knows - It's a lighthearted fun anime, with a silly plotline overall but a fun experience.... but the end... oh my gosh the end.... there is no way I can see them topping the last episode...
8-9 - Very very good, I would DEFINITELY recommend a watch even if it's not normally your thing!
6-7 - It was somewhere between average to great, very worth atleast one watch.
5 - The show was good enough to complete.
4 or less: Something is wrong with it and unless the anime is really your style, I wouldn't suggest it. (sometimes its the plot, sometimes its the execution ((Naruto shippudens ending ...)) that made me feel this way about it)
